The Northern Racing College 18-week Residential Foundation Course is designed for people both with experience or no previous equine experience. The 18 week course comprises of 12 weeks residential at college followed by a 6 week work experience with a racehorse trainer. During the Foundation Course students complete a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care. This course starts every 6 weeks.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Course students are found employment with a licensed racehorse trainer in the U.K. where they continue working towards their qualification whilst earning a salary. Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care

Upon completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme students can commence the Advanced Apprenticeship, including an Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management. This qualification is largely work based and therefore completed at the students place of work.

About us

The Northern Racing College based near Doncaster, South Yorkshire is a Centre of Excellence for the horseracing industry.

The Foundation Course is fully funded for EU citizens. To put it another way students receive tuition free of charge.

Open Mornings are held every month (except December).

Open Mornings provide potential students, their parents/guardians and careers advisors with the chance to observe a training day at the College.

Additional support

Students are supported throughout their training programmes by experienced staff both at college and in the workplace.

Learner success

Whilst a number of our students obtain a jockeys licence not all students have the desire to ride in races, preferring to care for the horses, to aspire to become travelling head racing grooms, head racing grooms, racing secretaries and racehorse trainers.

Hayley Turner, Dominic Elsworth, David Allan, Daniel Tudhope, Danny Cook, and Philip Makin are four of our leading lights on the racecourse, although the list could go on and on.
