Welcome to Tapton School

14-16

We are an 'outstanding' 11-18 school (Ofsted) with 1,660 students, including a Sixth Form of over 500, pleasantly situated in the south west of Sheffield and close to the Peak District National Park.

We are a Specialist College for Science and the Arts, which allows us a particular focus on Science and Mathematics teaching as well as Music, Art, Drama and Dance. In addition, we achieved Artsmark Gold and Sportsmark for the quality of our curriculum and opportunities for students in both Performing and Visual Arts, PE and Sport. To support this, in September 2001, we moved into new buildings with outstanding modern facilities for teaching and learning.

Our record of sustained success reflects our commitment to raising achievement for everyone.

We have the highest expectations of all students in every area of school life, and our uniform and behaviour policy is strongly supported by students, parents and staff.

Ours is a caring and ordered community with an atmosphere of calm and purposeful learning. Students are treated as individuals and we recognise and celebrate their different abilities, aptitudes and interests.

We work hard to ensure every young person is happy, safe and successful - a credit to themselves, their family and Tapton School.

We are delighted you are considering Tapton School and look forward to welcoming you.

16-19

Welcome to Tapton School where we are very proud of our reputation as an "outstanding Sixth Form" (Ofsted 2007 and 2012). We are committed to providing a secure, friendly environment which challenges our students and helps them succeed.  In addition, we were delighted to be named 'Secondary School of the Year' by The Sunday Times in 2014.

Through our ethos of care, support, friendship and hard work our students grow into exceptional young people, a credit to themselves, their homes, families and our school.

Our Sixth Form students enjoy every facet of school life, in and out of the classroom, as well as an expanding social life. We expect them to bring a maturity  to their studies and behaviour which reflects their senior position as role models for our younger students.

Exam results are consistently high and illustrate the motivation and talent of our students, the professionalism and dedication of our staff and, of course, the support of parents.

Our Sixth Form is a thriving community of young people working hard to achieve their goals, whether in academic success, post-18 aspirations or a host of other activities.

In 2014, 58% of our students entered Russell Gorup Universities.

Over 90 per cent of our students enter Higher Education, many attending the most competitive universities in the land. All our students receive expert guidance from tutors and specialist careers advisors.

We offer over 30 AS and A-level subjects, as well as level 3 Diplomas in Digital Media and Food and Nutrition, all led by subject specialists skilled in guiding the transition from GCSE to AS and A-level. The academic curriculum is complemented by a comprehensive programme of enrichment activities. Sporting, musical, theatrical and many other activities are also on offer.

Tapton Sixth Form information evening is held each November. You will be able to speak to the Sixth Form team and specialist subject staff as well as see the whole school. We can help to inform your decision, but the final choice has to be yours, following careful consideration. Applications are made online to the Local Education Authority. About us

High Expectations and aspirations to excellence are hallmarks of Tapton's approach.  Success at this level requires students to take more responsibility.  You are expected to work hard and respond maturely in a more adult working environment.  Students enjoy developing adult relationships with their teachers and each other.  This sets our Sixth Form apart and creates a lively and exciting atmosphere.

Facilities available

The Sixth Form area, with common room, outdoor terrace and cafe, forms the focus of daily life. This was renovated in 2016 and is a modern and airy space.  All subject departments have modern, comfortable teaching spaces and are well equipped, with access to interactive whiteboards and computers for individual student use.  This supports our well-established intranet and Virtual Learning Environment.  Completed in 2001, our building comprises outstanding specialist facilities in science, art, technology, drama, music and ICT.  Our sports hall, gym and all-weather games pitch are state-of-the-art and the large library is well resourced and staffed.

Additional support

When you join us, our specialist team of tutors will help you to settle in quickly.  Whether you are from Tapton School or elsewhere, there are new people to meet and new approaches to learn.  You will be assigned a personal tutor who meets with you each morning, helping you adjust to new expectations and explore issues like time management, study skills and career choice.  The Leadership Team, Head of Sixth Form, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Year Manager and Personal Tutors all work with teaching staff to support you during your time with us.

Students receive expert guidance throughout their Sixth Form career.  They are advised on subject choice during Year 11 to ensure their course matches their goals, and during Year 12 they are entered for AS exams.  Post-18 planning begins towards the end of Year 12, and decisions about Year 13 also need careful consideration.
