Welcome to Upton Hall F C J

Welcome to Upton Hall School FCJ

Upton has a dynamic Sixth Form offering a wide choice of subjects and excellent individual student support to ensure that all students achieve the best possible grades in their public examinations.

We are proud of our Sixth Form which has doubled in size over the past decade. Our rich academic programme is supplemented by additional academic, spiritual and extra-curricular activities. Individual careers support is available throughout the Sixth Form and work experience opportunities are individually tailored to support career aspirations. Every week we invite industry specialists and university representatives to speak to our students to provide them with rich insights into the world of industry and academia. First class interview preparation is organised with our team of specialist Higher Education interviewers. Intensive preparation for Oxford and Cambridge applicants, as well as candidates for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine is also arranged. For students interested in alternatives to university we have strong links with high calibre apprenticeship providers, such as those relating to Law and Engineering. Close pastoral support is provided by the Director of Sixth Form, the Assistant Directors of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form Tutorial Team.

The Sixth Form courses begin with an Induction Programme designed to help students make that important transition from Key Stage 4 to Advanced Level. This is the first step in a co-ordinated programme designed to offer advice about Higher Education, the UCAS process and how to maximise chances of success.

The social life in the Sixth Form is stimulating and varied with a variety of activities organised for lunchtime and after school. We welcome inspirational and sometimes high profile guests to speak to the Sixth Form students whenever possible. Trips abroad, community service, debating, participating in the Sports Leaders Award Scheme and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, orchestra and choir are just some of the activities currently undertaken by our Sixth Form students. Life in the Sixth Form concludes with two popular events, the ‘Going Down Mass’ and the ‘Leavers’ Ball’.

An excellent service is provided on results day to ensure that our students obtain places at appropriate universities.

Access our website at www.uptonhallschool.co.uk and you will be able to see the remarkable range of activities in which our Sixth Formers are engaged, in addition to their studies.

About us

Upton Hall School is rated “outstanding” by Ofsted.  Data published annually by the DfE show that students at Upton make exceptionally good progress; examination results achieved over the past five years rank the school as amongst the best in the Wirral, and within the top 10% of all schools nationally.  In recognition of its consistently strong academic performance, Upton Hall was designated a High Performing Specialist School, and was able to invest additional funding in the use of technology, the teaching of languages and the training of staff.  Although the funding is no longer available, its legacy continues to enhance learning through the extensive use of technology and the international dimension pervading the curriculum; this was recognised by the award of International School Status by the British Council.

Students in the Sixth Form typically study four subjects at AS level in Year 12, before continuing with three subjects at A2.  Additionally, many students also choose to take AS General Studies.  The extended project qualification (EPQ) is another popular option; equivalent to an AS level, this qualification was pioneered with great success at Upton, and continues to attract significant numbers of students each year, giving students the free-rein to pursue their individual passion in the sciences, humanities and visual and performing arts.

Beyond the curriculum is an impressive range of stimulating and varied activities.  Student participation is high in each of our instrumental ensembles, choirs, sports teams, debating societies and many others.  More formal qualifications are available through the thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award and Sports Leader Award schemes, as well as ab initio courses in Mandarin Chinese and Latin.

Sixth Form students are encouraged to take on leadership roles.  The Head Girl, her team of deputies and the senior prefects make a significant contribution to the wider school community, through their work as ambassadors and mentors.  Every year, a significant number of students join our Sixth Form from other schools; quickly assimilating into the Upton community, and they too feel confident in putting themselves forward for these key positions.

Facilities available

The Upton site is beautiful, comprising 21st century buildings skillfully designed to integrate with the original architecture from the early to mid 19th century.  The school benefits from a modern suite of science labs housed in their own purpose-built block, as well as a newly-constructed drama studio, technology rooms, art rooms and ICT suites.   Work has been completed on a stunning new building for modern foreign languages, which opened in September 2013.  Much of our older accommodation has also undergone major refurbishment in recent years, ensuring that our students receive the best possible educational experience across the age range and curriculum.  The Sixth Form itself has a large common room equipped with its own dedicated ICT facilities.

Additional support

At Upton Hall we passionately believe that for students to be successful, they must feel happy and supported.  Our pastoral responsibility to each student is paramount, especially during the critical years of transition from school to the world beyond.  Careful monitoring of progress and well-being, allows intervention and support to be put in place when it is needed most.  All students have a form tutor, who works closely with an Assistant Director of Sixth Form and the Director of Sixth Form.  The services of a counsellor are available on request.  The school also has a resident Careers Advisor, who works closely with the Sixth Form team, ensuring that students are fully equipped to make informed decisions about their future.

Our most able students are supported by a dedicated programme; this seeks to provide students with the opportunities they need to demonstrate scholarship at the highest level, as demanded by Oxford, Cambridge and the Ivy League universities of the USA.  Whilst the majority of our students choose to go to university when they leave, we recognise that rapid evolution of the post-19 landscape, may mean that traditional routes of progression are not right for everybody.  We strongly promote Higher Apprenticeships and School Leaver Schemes, which many companies now offer.

Learner success

Sixth Formers at Upton Hall have a long and distinguished record of success at A Level.  Figures from the past 5 years consistently show that over 60% of grades achieved at A Level are in the range A* – B; as such, our Sixth Form ranks as one of the top 10 state-funded Sixth Forms in the North West of England.  Please visit our website and view the wide range of courses and university destinations selected by our students when they leave.
