Sporting Academies

Founded in 2000, the Hartpury Sports Academy provides elite rugby, football, netball, golf, modern pentathlon, rowing and equestrian athletes with both high standard academic courses and the facilities and support services they require to train, compete and win at the highest level in their chosen sport. Many of our students have represented their sport at regional, national and international level.

Facilities available

Sports Academy Centre
The Hartpury Sports Academy Centre has been built to provide a top-quality training environment for members of the Hartpury Academy of Sport and Gloucester Rugby. Academy students use the centre
to improve their fitness as well as assess and monitor their performance. The centre is also the base for further education teaching and recreational sport at the College. Facilities within the centre include a fitness suite, sports hall, squash court, sports rehabilitation suite and physiotherapy consulting centre, two plunge pools, a performance analysis suite and classrooms. The centre overlooks a stadium comprising a 1st XV floodlit pitch, seating for up to 400 people and an all-weather rubber crumb pitch and is adjoined by the Hartpury College RFC Clubhouse, which is used as an additional performance analysis suite by the Hartpury RFC team and Gloucester Rugby.

The Hartpury Arena
The most recent addition to the student facilities at Hartpury is our International Equine Arena Complex, officially opened by Lord Sebastian Coe in 2007. The impressive building includes a 70 x 40 metre competition arena with additional warm-up facilities, seating for 600 spectators, teaching facilities and a panoramic restaurant. This facility complements the two indoor and four outdoor arenas, stabling for 230 horses, sports horse stud, FEI 1, 2 and 3 star level cross country courses, and extensive grazing land on campus.

Equine Therapy Centre
The Equine Therapy Centre forms an integral part of academic provision for our equine students. Practical sessions are regularly held using the high-speed treadmill, aqua-fit treadmill, digital radiography equipment and the equine operating theatre. Our on-site equine veterinary surgeon also performs a range of diagnostics including endoscopies on the high-speed treadmill, ultrasound scanning and radiographs, giving students a visual understanding of veterinary practices.

Home Farm
The College’s commercially run Home Farm, based on-campus, has gone from strength to strength since farm management company Velcourt took over the management of the operation in 2006. The 450-cow dairy unit features a rapid exit cellar parlour, cubicle housing, straw yards and pens. The 500-strong Holstein dairy herd are now averaging 8,500 litres per cow per annum. Plans are underway to expand the Dairy Unit facilities, which will allow Hartpury to increase the herd to 800 cows within the next three years.

Animal Care and Veterinary Care

The Animal Care department has an extensive range of small mammals such as rodents, rabbits and meerkats and vivarium species including reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Large aviaries house a wide variety of indigenous and non-indigenous birds and within the fully stocked aquatics room there is a diverse assortment of tropical and cold-water fish.

The onsite veterinary facilities include a Small Animal Veterinary Hospital, Canine Hydrotherapy Unit and Grooming Parlour. The college also has a fully equipped Equine Operating Theatre and Equine Veterinary and Therapy Centre with a High Speed Treadmill and Aquatreadmill.

Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
The LRC provides information, resources and IT facilities to support learning and teaching, including books, e-books, DVDs, computers, e-resources, magazines and CDs, supported by a team of professionally
trained staff to help with all your enquiries. Wi-Fi access is available on campus.
