Welcome to Newent Community School and SIxth Form Centre

Deciding what to do Post 16 can be both exciting and daunting. We hope that this information will make your decision easier.

Newent has a thriving and successful Sixth Form, and our aim is to meet your needs by offering both academic and vocational courses, extensive individual support, with opportunities to contribute to the real and varied life of a community school.

The staff in the Sixth Form offer a very high degree of expertise, professionalism and commitment to their courses. In addition, the school is very well resourced with specialist rooms, including exceptional sports, arts and science facilities.

Your Sixth Form is housed in accommodation that includes the Library, equipped and staffed study areas, and the Common Room.

At the heart of the Sixth Form lies a strong system of pastoral care: You will be assigned to a personal tutor, one of a team of twelve who are on hand to support you in your studies, career and higher education decisions.

Whilst you will receive a great deal of support, you are expected to demonstrate qualities of self-motivation and diligence, in short, a commitment to your chosen course of study.

As a committed student you will enjoy life in Newent Community School Sixth Form. It provides both a challenging and stimulating learning environment.

Enjoy your time with us and work hard.

Mike Wycherley

Director of Sixth Form Studies

"The sixth form is well led and increasingly effective."

About us

At Newent Sixth Form we strive to:

Give continual, individual, pastoral support through an experienced team of tutors

Offer the best range of opportunities and courses for ALL students

Provide a safe, supportive, caring and stimulating environment in which students will be successful whilst enjoying their learning experience

Encourage all students to achieve their academic and social potential, in preparation for their chosen course or employment

Support and develop independent study skills in a learning environment

Offer comprehensive careers advice and guidance to suit the needs of each INDIVIDUAL student

A major strength of the Sixth Form is the dedicated team of personal tutors.

Each student will be assigned to a personal tutor who is responsible for guiding them through their time in the Sixth Form. The tutor is the first point of contact for both students and parents.

Tutor groups meet for morning and afternoon registrations. Regular individual mentoring sessions are arranged, during which both academic and personal progress is discussed.

All students will receive individual targets and are then regularly assessed and monitored. This gives students and parents a clear and current record of academic progress.

Throughout the students’ time in the Sixth Form, extensive careers advice and guidance is given.

Sixth Form Careers Manager, Sue Lawrance, is based in the Sixth Form office and is readily accessible to students. She works alongside the personal tutors and is responsible for careers information, interview guidance, Higher Education applications and employment advice.

Additional support

The Sixth Form has a designated study area equipped with fully networked computers and access to a wireless connection. It is managed by the full time Sixth Form independent Learning Adviser, Beth Gammons who is available to guide and support students in all aspects of their studies.
