Welcome to Aylesford School and Sixth Form College
Head teacher's Comments
Aylesford School and Sixth Form College has a reputation for academic excellence, sporting achievement, service to the community and the development of potential. Our Sixth Form students exemplify this. We are proud of the young adults who act as excellent role models for our younger students, with high standards of self-discipline, personal behaviour and willingness to learn.
We have, in recent years worked hard to establish the importance of raising achievement as our guided principle and believe this is now recognised fully. Students deserve the right to experience and demonstrate excellence in their chosen specialist areas of Post 16 education and the Sixth Form College is pro-active in supporting them in this.
The Sixth Form Study Centre enables students to use their time productively and develop their own individual work ethos and offers a place to mix socially at lunch and break times. In addition Sixth Formers have their own Study Suite with fully equipped ICT facilities that support independent learning. Sixth Formers also have silent study provision arrangements with Sixth Form library space and their own 'quiet' working areas.
The library offers an excellent base for research and we have some purpose built Sixth Form teaching rooms. Our Refectory offers menus, snacks and coffee for Sixth Formers in a social setting throughout the morning. At times during the week these facilities are self managed and we expect high levels of responsibility.
The Governors and Staff are particularly proud of the range of courses on offer to students, with currently AS/A2 subjects and Level 2 qualifications making dozens of different combinations possible.
Students have an increased independence and accountability. We expect students to exercise good judgement within the bounds of their responsibility to themselves as learners and to others, with tutors and subject teachers providing much guidance, help and individual support. We also expect a high level of commitment to academic work, recreational activities and community service. We are much impressed as these expectations are realised on an annual basis. The twenty first century is in good hands.
Success in education relies heavily on good working relationships between the school, students and parents at one level and between individual staff and students at another. Students are encouraged to take part in activities beyond their academic choices. In this way students grow as individuals.
I believe that Aylesford School and Sixth Form College offers a positive environment for learning with high quality resources and enthusiastic, well-qualified and totally committed staff. We believe strongly of an 11-18 school where staff and students develop relationships that can support individuals as learners. There is much to be gained for students and staff in having a well established and successful Sixth Form and we invite you to become part of that vibrant future.
The school has recently achieved Specialist Language College status. This status means that with the benefit of substantial amounts of extra funding, we can extend the range of modern foreign languages offered to our students and the community. This funding
has enhanced provision and facilities across the curriculum.
Through our participation in the Central Warwickshire Consortium we can extend the courses available to students by collaborating with other schools in the area, this opens opportunities to courses such as Photography, Dance and Law.
The recently refurbished Sixth Form Study Suite includes ICT facilities and areas for private study and independent learning. The library offers an excellent base for research and we have some purpose built Sixth Form Teaching Rooms.
A Sixth Form common room is provided for students to mix socially. The school refectory offers menus, snacks and coffee for Sixth Form students in a social setting throughout the morning.
Close relationships with all our local HE providers including a Phoenix Partnership with Coventry University. Students have access to the Worldwide Volunteers Organization, the Year in Industry Scheme and a number of local and national company links e.g. Price Waterhouse Cooper. Work Experience is a built in entitlement for Year 12 and work placements are a feature of our expanding course offer. In this latter context we work with “Zenith Partnerships” and the Association of Training Providers. Partnership in real terms is core to our Sixth Form provision.
All students are allocated a personal tutor. Tutors help with study skills, careers guidance, extra-curricular and social education activities, as well as compiling references. Tutors mentor Individual Action Planning and record of achievement processes
linked to the student’s individual Track Point profile issued twice a year.
The Connexions service works in partnership with the school to offer individual interviews and personal advice.
For Special Needs the school delivers a comprehensive range of support and access arrangements to all students in response to student need.
Sixth Form religious education includes an introduction to the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, an overview of World Religion and a consideration of the contribution made by religion to society. It is an integral part of the General Studies course. An annual Sixth Form RE Conference explores thought-provoking issues in a lively atmosphere.
