About us

The REAL programme is your first step onto your chosen career path and will give you the support, training, vocational experience and time to gain the confidence and skills you need to move onto your next stage of training.

We understand that your first step back into training can be hard and that you might have other issues in your life that are important to you. Therefore, the REAL programme has flexible hours which can be built up as you attend your training.

We work with training providers across Leeds to deliver courses in specific vocational areas. The individual courses vary in length so this can be tailored to suit you and when you are ready to move onto your next stage of learning, you will be supported to do so.

To start on the REAL programme:

We can arrange an informal chat for you with one of the REAL workers and arrange visits for you to any of the REAL projects to see if you think the programme is for you. If you think it is, then a start date is arranged and we will make sure everything is in place for your first day.

Learner success

When Jed started the REAL+ course he was looking for somewhere where he could learn and develop and would help him to make a successful transition from school to college. After discussing the options available through REAL+ with his REAL+ Support Worker, he chose to join the Sports & Wellbeing course at The Beck.

He was enthusiastic about the course and would always take part in the sporting activities, encouraging his teammates and giving 100% in everything he did. He became a valued member of the team which meant that he soon became friends with everyone in his group and others at The Beck. At the end of the course, Jed congratulated every one of his class mates and made sure they recognized their own achievements as he did.

The group would not have been the same without Jed and everyone will remember Jed in their experience on the course, students and staff alike.  It was for these reasons that he was awarded Team Player of the Year at the 2012 IGEN Learner Celebration Awards.

Paige started REAL as a shy young person lacking in confidence. School was not a great experience but it didn’t hold her back in striving to achieve. This young person has blossomed since they joined the REAL programme. When new people join the programme she makes them feel welcome and seems to enjoy helping and advising them in group tasks. The shyness and lack of confidence have waned as others looked to her for help.  Paige has become a popular member of the group that is liked by everyone and in return they like and respect everyone in the group.

From a shy introvert individual Paige has become more confident and assertive, where she is a role model for other learners and an excellent team player and leader.  She has overcome many difficulties in her life, achieved qualifications and is now planning a life for herself and her daughter.

For her achievements on the REAL programme, Paige won Team Player of the Year and REAL Learner of the Year at the 2011 Learner Celebration awards.

After Connor left school he did not engage in any training or education for over 12 months. Once he started on REAL he fully engaged with the mechanics provision at NACRO training, not missing a day and arriving on time. Through support from his linked worker his additional barriers to learning were also overcome. Connor has now progressed onto NACRO’s Foundation Learning provision and has completed an ABC qualification in mechanics. Due to Connor’s progress he was the winning nomination of an ‘outstanding achievement award’ at the igen awards last year.
