Welcome to Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre
A message from the Principal
Following our best ever A Level results, which place us in the top 10% of A Level providers in the country, there has never been a better time to join our Post 16 Centre at Penistone Grammar School Advanced Learning Centre.
The new Post 16 Centre is second to none with excellent facilities, the very best in ICT provision and a modern, state of the art environment in which students can work, relax and socialise. The study area will inspire students to learn and aim high; when they choose to relax there is a superb social area with a games room and dining.
Academic provision is of the highest quality combined with first class support to ensure that students stay focused and have the confidence to aim high. In the current climate it is essential to provide the very best support and guidance for students when making their applications to universities and this is second to none at PGS; last year over 95% of students gained places at their preferred institutions.
Above all we want our students to enjoy their post 16 experience at PGS and remember these special days for the rest of their lives; we are particularly proud of the fact that students who join us from other schools settle in very quickly and go on to have a successful and fulfilling experience.
Penistone Grammar School Advanced Learning Centre opened in May 2011. This £35 million state-of-the-art learning centre provides fantastic facilities for students and the surrounding community.
Our Post 16 centre provides students with a large Common room area in which to relax and work. There is a dedicated post 16 ICT suite, allowing students all day access to internet linked computers.
Within the common room we have a post 16 café serving hot and cold food and drinks. The Post 16 area is situated on level 3 of the school and students are encouraged to use this facility during their study periods and at break and lunchtime.
Students will have a personal tutor throughout their time in the Sixth Form. A student’s relationship with their tutor is very important, as not only will the tutor offer pastoral guidance but also monitor academic targets and oversee attainment and achievement.
Students will have regular progress reviews with their personal tutor.
Post 16 students elect their own student union and run their own events committee which organises social events and the Year 13 Leaving Ball as well as raising money for local and national charities and organisations.
At Penistone Grammar School ALC we are committed to supporting students in full-time education. To promote this, the Post 16 facility has access to a 16 – 19 Bursary Fund, whereby students can apply for assistance towards costs associated with their continued education.
This funding is intended to help with the hardship needs of individual students and can be used to support the following:
· Purchase of books, materials and equipment
· School meals
· Transport to and from college
· Exam fees and resits
· Field trips and course visits
· Theatre visits
· University open day expenses
We encourage as many students as possible, who may be eligible for support, to register their interest with us and funding is now promoted through;
· Post 16 Open Evening
· Post 16 induction packs
· Post 16 television screens and noticeboards
Last year we achieved 85% of students gaining a place at the university of their choice.
