Welcome to King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon

Welcome to King Edward VI School. As a member of our Sixth Form we can offer you many exciting opportunities which will prove rewarding as well as challenging.

You will take on a much greater workload than you have experienced in the past. From the beginning of Year 12, you will be expected to study with increasing independence and self-reliance. At the same time, you have the opportunity to take on new responsibilities and commitments which will help you develop skills you never suspected you possessed.

Within a caring, friendly and structured environment you will have the opportunity to realise your full potential, both in your academic studies, and in the ways in which you learn to relate to others: your peers, the staff and, crucially, the younger members of the school community.

Our vision of a successful Sixth Form is a hard-working and stimulating environment, where students have to organise their time effectively in order to ensure they can become involved in a broad range of activities. An environment where both the academic and the extra-curricular are valued and celebrated; and where everything is underpinned by close pastoral guidance.

About us

K.E.S. is a forward-looking School which celebrates a long and distinguished history, a reputation for high academic standards and an outstanding extra-curricular programme. We are a small School that aims to provide a secure, happy and well ordered environment in which all our students are challenged to make the very best of their talents. It is a purposeful and busy place where you will find the highest standards of work, commitment and courtesy.

All subjects are taught by specialist teachers in discrete departmental areas. Traditional methods co-exist with innovative teaching and learning that embrace the very latest technologies. Our curriculum is enriched by a vast array of activities, including fieldtrips, exchanges, lectures, competitions and work-related learning. This, combined with small sets in examination classes, enables us to achieve academic results that are among the very best nationally.

We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for our students to build on existing talents whilst developing new skills and interests. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer at lunchtime, after School, at the weekend, and in the holidays. Sport, Music and Drama are simply outstanding and rarely matched in either the State or Independent Sector. There is a major sporting fixtures programme, and regular concerts and drama productions are of the highest quality. First-class facilities and expert coaching ensure that sports teams and instrumental ensembles frequently enjoy success in national and international competitions. Each year, as part of the extra-curricular programme, our students are able to participate in a variety of overseas tours and expeditions. All who join K.E.S. are expected and encouraged to play a full part in this rich School life.

Additional support

As a Sixth Form student, there are several different systems of support available to you. You will develop a close working relationship with your Tutor to ensure that any problems experienced can be tackled immediately. Each Tutor will spend time with you on an individual basis and has initial responsibility for ensuring the smooth and happy transition from GCSE to Sixth Form studies.

We have developed a sophisticated programme of advice and support to help you make the right decisions about your Higher Education and future career. In addition, students have access to a very well stocked Careers Library as well as our highly experienced Careers Advisor.

Learner success

Attainment is excellent in the Sixth Form. in 2013 81.5% of all A level entries were graded at A*-B. As can be expected from these outstanding results, the vast majority attain places at competitive universities.
