Welcome to Samuel Whitbread Academy
We offer an exceptional academic and extracurricular experience at Samuel Whitbread Academy in an outstanding learning environment where students are expected to work hard and achieve their best. In our last Ofsted inspection, we were judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features and over the next three years we have set ourselves the target of being Outstanding!
Our GCSE results are amongst the best in the local authority. We offer a well-balanced curriculum with plenty of choice to prepare our students for the next stage in their lives. Most of our students continue on to the Sixth Form, which is one of the largest and highest performing in the area - providing students with a huge range of courses designed to match the expectations of universities and employers.
Our pastoral care is exceptional and we have dedicated pastoral support teams for each year group. The academy is also broken down into five houses, named after people who have made a distinctive contribution to our community. These provide the framework for the multitude of different competitions, celebrations and charity events that bring our school community together during the year.
Extracurricular opportunity is a vital part of our ethos and we expect all of our students to get involved in at least one club or activity. There are a huge number of opportunities ranging from highly competitive sports teams to spectacular drama and musical performances.
We enjoy showing visitors around the school so please take the opportunity to come and see us during the school day, so you can see the school in action and we can answer any questions you may have.
We look forward to seeing you.
Nick Martin, Principal.
Samuel Whitbread Academy’s Sixth Form ethos is summarised in four words:
Believe – Achieve – Succeed – Exceed. Every student in our sixth form is encouraged to believe in their abilities and to achieve and succeed with a positive mental attitude.
We can definitely be very proud of our academic achievements. The sixth form is within the top 20% of sixth forms in the UK in terms of our value added data and this is testament to the hard work of students and staff. With highly qualified staff and a wide range of enrichment opportunities, this ensures students are individually challenged and stretched in academic study and beyond.
Mr L Huckle - The Head of Sixth Form
The buildings and facilities at Samuel Whitbread are outstanding. They provide our students and staff with a fantastic environment in which to learn and work. In addition to well-appointed classrooms, we have a number of specialist facilities designed for ‘A’ Level standard work - that are also used by younger age groups. We have a spacious and well stocked library, as well as several independent study rooms for our Sixth Form students.
For engineering and design technology we have a number of workshops with specialist equipment such as laser cutters and 3D printers. We have 14 science laboratories which are supported by a well-stocked science prep room and a dedicated team of technicians.
Art and textiles students benefit from a suite of rooms with a range of equipment including Apple computers for design and a kiln for pottery and ceramic work. Our drama and dance students use the theatre and four studios, with sprung floors, lighting, mirrors and sound equipment. Students studying music or film have access to a recording studio and use digital recording kit with high powered editing equipment and the latest industry standard software.
We have three fully equipped indoor performance spaces including a theatre, hall and activities studio. Physical Education and sport have many hard areas, a gym, large sports hall (with its own viewing gallery) and extensive grounds and laid out pitches that are second to none!
We have ten specialist computer suites and a number of other IT facilities for students to use. We also encourage students to use their own devices and we recently upgraded the wireless broadband to accommodate a much broader bandwidth.
We have a strong and well developed Learning Support Department that supports students with Special Educational Needs. The dedicated team work with staff and students in classrooms to help them achieve their very best, as well as providing a package of support outside of the classroom to meet the needs of each student.THOMAS ROWELL

Many of our Sixth Form students look forward to continuing their education beyond A level whether that be at university, in apprenticeships or even training in employment. Samuel Whitbread Academy’s Sixth Form has an excellent track record of supporting students’ applications to some of the most prestigious universities, in the UK and abroad. We have a very focused Oxbridge and medicine high attainers group alongside the broader yet highly respectable and stringent Russell Group and Million+ group. No matter which level of further study students are wishing to aspire to our team is always willing to support, regardless of the intended destinations.
The vast majority of our students still consider university as their first choice, followed by apprenticeships, gap years or Art Foundation courses. Over recent years the percentage of our students taking up places at university has increased both within the Million+ group and also into top Russell Group universities. Each year students from Samuel Whitbread also go on to study at Oxbridge and we even have students going on to study overseas in places such as Florida and Boston.
We care about our students’ future choices and invest great time and effort to ensure all parties are involved in this decision-making process including parents, teachers, tutors and the sixth form team.
