About us

Joseph Chamberlain is a sixth form college independently governed by its own Corporation and funded by the Government. We are not a school sixth form; nor are we part of a large FE college as is the case with most sixth form centres. As the only Sixth Form College or General Further Education College in Birmingham or Solihull to have been awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education and an overall grade 2 (Good) classification from OfSTED, demand for places is high.

One of the reasons for our success is that we are a small college - but this means we cannot take everyone who applies. We also know that our courses may not be the right choice for everyone and we are always happy to give impartial advice about your post-16 options. Because we cannot take everyone who applies we may advise you about other colleges or schools that may be a good choice for you.

Tutors at Joseph Chamberlain have very high expectations; we expect our students to work hard and to meet demanding targets. We offer a lot of support and will work with you to get the best possible results. If you feel that the distinctive philosophy offered at JCC is right for you, apply early and, above all, work hard at school to ensure that your reference is good enough to get a place here. We look forward to meeting you and advising you about your future options.

However, we realise that the vast amount of information available can make searching difficult so our teachers build the best internet resources into courses, giving you the most appropriate links for your particular syllabus. Additional support

ADDITIONAL LEARNING SUPPORT
The College prides itself on the inclusion of students with additional learning needs. It has a team of specialist staff who work with students in and outside of lessons to remove barriers to learning. The aim of the support is to promote learning and independence as well as to develop social and employability skills.

Discrete and sensitive support is offered to students with learning differences including dyslexia, Asperger’s Syndrome, visual or hearing impairment, physical difficulties or mental or physical health needs. We identify additional needs on an individual basis and tailor the support in order to enable students to achieve their full potential. Each student is allocated a ‘key worker’ who oversees the support package that is in place to support individual needs. Support is reviewed with students regularly and adjusted to allow for independence to grow.

IN CLASS SUPPORT
We offer in class support where Learning Support Assistants work with individuals or small groups in the classroom. This may include note taking, helping to understand the main points of the lesson and organising work.

DYSLEXIA SUPPORT
We offer dyslexic screening assessments, full assessments (where necessary) and specialist dyslexic support together with any materials in a format that best suits individual needs. As well as in class support, where appropriate, we offer individual and small group support outside of lessons to develop specific learning techniques and effective use of assistive technology.

EXAM SUPPORT
Exam support is organised for those students who are entitled to additional time or separate accommodation.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
The College has a range of assistive technology to support the learning process. Where appropriate, laptops and Dictaphones are available for loan.

LINKS WITH SPECIALIST SUPPORT TEAMS
The College works closely with specialist teachers for visual impairment and hearing impairment to ensure that appropriate resources are available and adaptations are made to maximise opportunities for learners whilst they are in College.

INDIVIDUAL & SMALL GROUP SUPPORT
Individual and small group sessions are timetabled outside or lessons. The purpose of the sessions is to develop the skills that are needed in order for the learners to become more independent. In small group sessions students are matched carefully so that they have similar needs and can be supportive towards each other.

Learner success

WE'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

Having celebrated its best ever AS and A2 results last year, Joseph Chamberlain College is delighted that its students have done even better this year. Once again, the A level pass rate is 99% and the AS pass rate is over 90%. In the vast majority of A level subjects, the pass rate was 100% and all BTEC courses had 100% pass rate. We have seen a further increase in the number of students receiving high grades A-B this year, with more students than ever gaining places at their first choice universities. A record number of students this year will be joining the most competitive universitiy courses.

Among our outstanding results are Fazila Hussain who got three A* grades in English, History and Politics. Fazila, who came to us from Swanshurst School, has now secured a place to study Law at The University of Birmingham. Abdul Raheem, who came to us from Golden Hillock School, was awarded A*, A, A in Maths, Biology and Chemistry and will also be going to The University of Birmingham to study Chemical Engineering. Mohsin Adnaan, a former student of Park View School received A*, A, A in Maths, Biology and Chemistry and has secured a place at London School of Economics to study Business Mathematics and Statistics. Sabina Akhtar, having joined us from Selly Park Girls’ School, was awarded A*, A, A in Maths, Biology and Chemistry and will be going to The University of Birmingham to study Mathematics.

Tony Day, Deputy Principal at the College, commented, ‘Once again, I am so proud of all our students and staff at Joseph Chamberlain College. We did so well last year and it is simply fantastic to have exceeded this high record with this year’s results. This means that we are sending more students than ever to the most competitive university courses in the country. We are delighted to see so many of our students do so well and know that their future careers are now far more secure.’
