Welcome to The Bushey Academy

The Bushey Academy is a high-achieving, local school for local children. We moved into our double award winning £30 million building in Janaury 2013, enjoy a positive reptation in the local area and benefit from strong parental support.

Examination results have risen every year for the last five years, as has demand for places to study here. Over 700 people applied for a place in the September 2015 cohort, leaving the academy heavily oversubscribed and with a long waiting list.

The Bushey Academy is a learning-focused community where happiness is derived from achievement and positive self-esteem. A place where individuals develop the confidence in themselves and the understanding of others around them to be active contributors to society. The innovative and individually targeted curriculum allows all students to succeed in their own areas of strength; the academy houses give everyone the chance to shine outside the classroom; and in all areas individual enterprise and endeavour are both expected and rewarded, ensuring that students and staff at the academy are‘proud to belong’.

Students and staff bring life to the school vision statement through their approach to learning, both in and out of the classroom.

In December 2013 Ofsted judged The Bushey Academy to be ‘Good’ in every category. Inspectors were especially complimentary about the academic progress and good behaviour of students, the high quality of teaching, the strengths of the sixth form and the ambitious and effective leadership of the school. They also commented on how other schools highly rated the support they had been given by the academy.  Our results made us the third highest performing school in Hertfordshire, in the top 200 schools nationally based on key progress measures and the Education Business Awards recognised us as an ‘Outstanding Academy’ .

In 2014, our achievement was recognised with the SSAT (Schools, Students and Teachers Network) Education Outcome Award for being in the top 20% of schools nationally for progress made by students between their Key Stage 2 results at primary school and their Key Stage 4 results.  In addition, 100% of our Sixth Formers opting for University secured a place in a University of their choice, with over 25% of Year 13 students securing a place at a Russell Group University.

2015 was another strong year for the academy, (a full breakdown of results can be found under Performance Results) and it built on solid foundations of success.  For the third consecutive year, The Bushey Academy were once again recognised with the SSAT (Schools, Students and Teachers Network) Education Outcome Award for being in the top 20% of schools nationally for progress made by students between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4.

As well as this most recent accolade, The Bushey Academy has twice been chosen as a case study of good practice by the Department for Education and once by the Office of The Schools Commissioner.

A great deal of hard work went into making the school the success story that it now is, and the dedication and commitment of all the staff, the positive attitudes, self-belief and high expectations of students, the support of parents and the work of the governing body all combine to make a highly effective and sought after school. Even from this position of strength, we continue to strive for ever higher standards of excellence.

About us

We believe that our Sixth Form offers a unique and innovative educational experience.  Our students are a lively, dynamic, and diverse group of young learners. The academy is incredibly proud of every single one of them.

We also take substantial pride in ensuring that all of our Sixth Form students have access to a high-quality academic education: class sizes are small, and the teaching is excellent. There is an exciting range of academic provision, which includes A Level and both Level 3 and Level 2 Vocational Qualifications. Furthermore, our ambitious Consortium arrangements with Bushey Meads School have further enhanced the breadth of opportunity for those who chose to study with us.

We construct a highly personalised academic package for each of our students, and a number elect to study up to 4 subjects in their first year.  There is also the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in a subject of their choosing. This is designed – alongside other enhanced learning opportunities – to academically stretch students, and develop vital research skills.

The Sixth Form is also numerically small enough for every single student to be known as an individual, and supported throughout their time with us. On entry to Year 12, students have an extended Induction Programme which is designed to smooth the transition from GCSE, and develop the important skills which underpin independent learning. The academic progress and pastoral welfare of each student is reviewed on a weekly basis, and support provided where necessary. An integral aspect of our ethos is to work closely and collaboratively with parents and carers, to ensure that our students fulfil their true potential.

In terms of pathways, the vast majority of our students obtain their desired university places, although there is also personalised support and guidance for those who wish to progress directly into employment.

Our Sixth Form is dedicated to shaping young lives, and I am always happy to answer any enquires from those who wish to consider joining this very special school community.
