Welcome to Polam Hall School

Life in Polam’s sixth form is a sociable, lively and challenging step between school and university.

There is a wide choice of A-level subjects, and small classes enable a highly individualised style of teaching. For prospective parents and pupils wishing to find out more, resources include the senior school ‘curriculum‘ section, which introduces each topic area and the teaching methods, and the downloadable sixth form handbook which gives a detailed overview of what is on offer at A and AS level.

The academic side of sixth form life is supported by excellent extra-curricular activities as each of Polam’s young adults develops their own strengths and talents in readiness for making choices about further study or work.

The natural progression in independence and autonomy which the sixth form offers to prepare young adults for the world of study and work is accompanied by strong pastoral support from the teaching staff. The small group setting of most A-level classes encourages confidence, and facilitates close and durable friendships.

"The friendships that you make are really intimate. No-one’s scared of saying anything. In a bigger place, I might not speak up as much. Friendships you make at school will carry you through life." – Serena Bury, U6

Sixth formers have their own study centre, Plantation, known affectionately as ‘Plant’. This attractive Victorian building is dedicated to the sixth form, with two A-level teaching rooms, and a maze of s small work and chat rooms, larger common rooms and quiet corners. Each pupil has their own space to be used for independent study, revision or homework.

Plantation is definitely about relaxation, too. Pupils enjoy a certain degree of freedom, making toast and smoothies in the two independent kitchens. There is a table football set, a wide screen TV and gym equipment, and even a sun lounger for revising for summer exams on the lawn. Enjoying a relatively high degree of autonomy compared to pupils lower down the school helps pupils to develop responsibility and confidence. This is reflected in the uniform rules – in the sixth form, pupils no longer wear uniform but instead wear a smart suit.

"The grounds are lovely and when it’s sunny it’s nice to just wander. But it’s also nice to have the town nearby – we can pop to Sainsbury’s, or if we need something for a house play, or if there’s a face paint emergency we can run an errand during lunch break!" – Caitlin Walker, L6

There is wifi throughout Plantation, and an equipped computer suite, used for activities ranging from quiet online research and assignment writing to very lively script writing sessions in the run up to House Plays.
