Welcome to The Purbeck School
Welcome to The Purbeck School website, I hope this introduction gives you a flavour of the school and helps you to understand why I and the staff who work here feel deeply privileged to do so.
The Purbeck School is a vibrant and exciting community to learn in serving over 1000 students in the Isle of Purbeck and surrounding area. The school is an 11-18 provider offering an all through educational service, we are deeply committed to ensuring that all our students succeed and that they are fully prepared for the challenges that the 21st century holds for them, whether that be in further/higher education, or in the world of work and apprenticeships. We are very proud to have a track record of exceptional A Level results alongside GCSE results which show that for the past two years students at The Purbeck School gain on average nearly half a grade higher than other schools. As our OFSTED report of January 2015 commented ‘Teachers expect students to do better than in schools elsewhere’.
There are a wealth of opportunities available for students at the school. Whether it be joining one of the many sports teams, singing in the choir, taking a part in the musical, joining the STEM club, taking part in some of the many trips such as the Battlefields Tour to Belgium, the Arts trip to New York, or the Sports Tour to Greece, there really is something for everybody. We take great pride in our pastoral system where students are placed in one of Houses (Swift; Skylark; Kestrel; Kingfisher) to be nurtured throughout their time at the school, whilst our Leadership programmes promote self-reliance and confidence. Our watchwords for the students are ‘Respect, Aspiration and Perseverance’.
The school has won a number of awards over the past 3 years and is proud to be the holder of the prestigious NACE award which is awarded to schools which challenge and stretch their most able and gifted pupils, we are one of only handful of schools in the country to have been awarded this. We have been highlighted in a Government report ‘The Parliamentary Review’ as an exceptional example of and provider of education, and we have recently been designated as a Dyslexic Friendly School.
As if this was not enough the school has also undergone major renovation over the past 5 years with the front of the school being totally redesigned and many of the classroom environments have been transformed so that we can now boast some state of the art facilities. There has also been some organisational change in the area which saw the school move from an upper to a secondary school as of 2013.
As I indicated at the start of this introduction I am very proud to be leading this organisation and know how committed the staff and students are to ensure that The Purbeck School remains a fantastic place to learn.
The Purbeck School is a fully comprehensive school serving the whole of the Isle of Purbeck including the towns of Wareham and Swanage. We welcome some students from the Poole area too. The school provides a relevant and broad curriculum to meet your child’s developing interests and ambitions all delivered by specialist teachers in specialist classrooms. You will find information about our curriculum on this site. We believe also that education for life is about much more than the academic content of courses, and The Purbeck School offers a wide range of enriching opportunities to prepare its students for their futures. There are opportunities to get involved in sport, in drama, in debating, in Duke of Edinburgh, in looking after our environment as a member of the Eco team and in raising money for charity to name but a few. Sport is particularly strong at our school and our facilities are superb – we have both a swimming pool and an all-weather pitch.
In September 2013 we became a full 11-18 secondary school after previously having upper school status. Further changes include the rebuilding programme which is nearing completion and includes outstanding new facilities such as our brand new Sixth Form Centre, LRC, canteen and bistro. Additionally all students are now looking wonderful in our brand new school uniform; as one students said, ‘I feel like James Bond!’ The Purbeck School offers outstanding facilities within which to learn, progress, aspire and succeed.
