Welcome to Brinsworth Academy
This prospectus is intended to be no more than a brief introduction to Brinsworth Academyand, as such, it cannot do justice to the rich variety of educational activity of the school, which takes a little longer to discover. Brinsworth Academy is a vibrant, forward looking and confident comprehensive school which aims to meet the future needs of our young people and the world they inhabit. Students come to us from from various parts of Rotherham, and from Sheffield, as a result of preference. We have students from a variety of different backgrounds and we feel that this diversity reflects the local community and provides one of the strengths of the school. Students are given the opportunity to fulfil their educational potential at our school. We aim to ensure students receive the best possible education. I hope you find the information helpful and informative and I invite you to contact us with any questions you may have regarding 14-19 choices.
About Brinsworth Academy: We have approximately 1400 students, in Years 7 to 13. About 200 of them are in the Sixth Form. We were inspected by OFSTED in June 2012 and they reported the "Brinsworth is a good school with a good Sixth Form." They said "Achievement is good in the Sixth Form." Our students come to us from the housing areas near to the school but additionally and increasingly, as a result of preference, from other areas of Rotherham and Sheffield. Sixth Formers are coming to us in ever growing numbers from other Rotherham schools. Our school occupies a large site and this has the benefit of plentiful space for students' leisure and recreation. Teaching is delivered in a number of discrete accommodation blocks. Our Sixth Form enjoys the benefit of a large Common Room and an extensive Study Area, fully equipped with computers, in the newest of these blocks. Brinsworth Achievement: 58% of our year 11 students (2016) attained A* - C in Maths and English. The progress students make through the school is good. At A level (A2), the pass rate was 100%, with 47% of passes at A*/B and 21% at A*/A. Over 90% of our year 13 students go on to access higher education courses of their first choice. Successful progression routes beyond the Sixth Form: We have many students each year applying to Russell Group universities and this year 20% of our students were successful in securing places at these top universities (6% higher than national figures) and one student secured a place at the prestigious Yale University in the USA. We offer a wide range of HE activities and have developed excellent links with universities across the country including Cambridge, Sheffield and Newcastle University. Our HE summer programme is designed to give our students a balanced view of opportunities available to them so they can make well-informed decisions about their futures. Excellent guidance and support is offered to all students and their parents through this very stressful time. OFSTED reported "Students in the Sixth Form make good progress to the next stage of education, training or employment”. Brinsworth Extra-Curricular opportunities: We offer an extensive range of extra-curricular visits and activities. These include trips abroad for students in all key stages, including New York for sixth formers and a wide variety of subject-related day and shorter residential visits. Support & Guidance: Our strong pastoral system is based on year groups, each with a Head of Year, supported by Assistant Heads of Year, achievement support practitioners and form tutors. Our aim of 'Achieving Excellence' permeates the school and age-appropriate rewards are earned by students who are positive, polite and responsible. Older students, particularly Sixth Formers, are encouraged to support the work of younger students and to demonstrate their qualities, pursuing awards such as Duke of Edinburgh and Sports Leader and participating in the Student Leadership programme. Our school is a welcoming, well-ordered and harmonious community. OFSTED found "The school is calm and orderly. Students are polite, welcoming and cooperative" and "Effective strategies promote good relationships and behaviour in classrooms, around the school and between ethnic groups". We stage team-building days for year 6 students, prior to their arrival, for our new year 7s and our new year 12s.
