Welcome to Medina College

At Medina, we are passionate about making a difference to young people’s lives and equipping them for futures in which they can achieve their aspirations. Our ethos is to relentlessly pursue outstanding teaching, learning and pastoral care, whilst maintaining the focus on the needs of the individual student. Our aim and expectation is that every student who is part of our community will achieve their best in all aspects of school life.

We have a talented team of teachers and other professionals who provide students with the best possible opportunities in a wide range of subject areas. We provide a carefully planned curriculum to ensure that whatever your child’s interests or career ambitions, we are able to provide for their needs.

Medina College is very proud of its students. The College Council and prefect teams have key roles in driving forward innovative change. There is also an active House system and an extensive extra-curricular programme which both provide incredible learning opportunities outside the classroom.

We have very strong links with our feeder primary schools and we encourage both Year 6 and Year 5 students to join us for special events throughout the year.

Outstanding education is only achieved by working in partnership with parents and carers. We want you to play a full and active role in school life, supporting your child and working with us to ensure success. We welcome collaboration and feedback about what we do well and where we could improve. Together we can ensure each student leaves us as an educated, articulate, young adult prepared to embrace the world and the challenges ahead.

About us

Medina College is a large and thriving 11 – 19 college in the centre of Newport on the Isle of Wight. There are approximately 1300 students on roll with 270 of these based at our VI form campus, approximately 1.5 miles away in the centre of Newport. The VI form is shared with Carisbrooke College, our Federation partner.

There are extensive grounds and playing fields with the added benefit of the use of a professional leisure centre. The PE department makes excellent use of these facilities so students can participate in a wide range of activities from trampolining to swimming. As a designated Arts College, we are equipped with superb specialist facilities, including a fully functioning 420 seat community theatre, a ‘black box’ drama studio, a specialist dance studio and a professional recording studio. In addition, we have numerous Apple Mac suites for music technology, graphics and art.

Medina College continues its partnership with Solo (an IIT Trust partner) and annually hosts the Isle of Wight Festival. This provides a wide range of ‘money can’t buy’ opportunities and experiences for our students, such as set building, artist liaison duties and even performances for festival goers.

Over the last few years, we have extensively refurbished our technology block including the purpose built hair and beauty and carpentry studios. Our science department has also been fully refurbished with nine laboratories set up to deliver a highly practical and innovative curriculum. New facilities have also been built for geography, English and ICT, all of which incorporate the latest environmental friendly building technologies.

We are continuing to invest in the latest technologies to support students’ learning. All classrooms have access to IT and all are fitted with interactive whiteboards. There is a full wireless network throughout the College providing a Virtual Learning Environment. In many lessons, students have access to iPads to support the delivery of an innovative curriculum.

Students come to Medina from across the Island and we have close links with our feeder schools. We run a number of initiatives throughout the year to directly engage primary school children with subjects such as arts, sciences and technology; in particular we work with Year 5 and 6 children to prepare them for the transition to secondary school. One of our priorities is to strengthen the curricular, pastoral and extra-curricular links with our local primaries.

As a Specialist Arts College, Medina has outstanding arts facilities and offers a multitude of opportunities in this discipline. We have achieved the nationally recognized Artsmark Gold status and have been awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award in recognition of our work with parents to achieve the best outcomes for young people.
