Welcome to Lancaster Girls' Grammar School
Welcome to the Sixth Form
With approximately 350 students studying for their A Levels at LGGS we are a flourishing community offering a wide range of courses. Our Sixth Form is enhanced every year by a large number of students who join us from other schools; in 2014 we welcomed 61 such students. We have an excellent academic reputation and in 2014, 77% of A Level grades were grades A* to B with 17% at A*. This reflects the very high standards of teaching and learning at LGGS.
The focal points for independent study are The Green Room, our Sixth Form Centre and our very well equipped library. Our teachers work hard to support Sixth Form students and there are many opportunities above and beyond the taught curriculum. Our students enjoy a varied programme of enrichment studies ranging from Sports Leader Award to learning Mandarin and Latin and the exciting opportunities for self-directed study through the Extended Project Qualification. Sixth Form students make very good use of our new gym facilities, manage academic societies to enhance their appreciation of their subject of interest, enjoy sports teams, orchestra and much more.
There are no two days the same at LGGS and it would be fair to say no two students having an identical day; there are so many opportunities to learn and to lead. We are very proud to see the vast majority of our students go to university and approximately half of those go on to Russell Group universities. We are equally proud of those students who leave us ready for employment or apprenticeships equipped to excel.
Our Sixth Form students play a highly valued role in the life of the school, assuming leadership responsibilities that foster a strong school community and help to prepare Sixth Formers for their future. Our enrichment programme offers a wealth of super curricular opportunities including the very popular and successful Extended Project Qualification.
We also have an extensive programme of visiting speakers providing valuable insights into university courses and opportunities post-18. A large proportion of our students join us from other schools and everyone settles together very quickly with clear support and guidance from teaching staff, Form Tutors and the Heads of Sixth Form. With extensive sports teams, our new gym and dance studio alongside opportunities in music, expeditions, travel and educational visits we are sure you will find LGGS Sixth Form has a lot to offer.
Our very high standard of education, support and guidance prepares our students to access competitive and popular degree courses. A visit to the school on our Sixth Form Open Evening will give you are very good idea of what it is like to study here. We look forward to meeting you.
The Sixth Form at LGGS is large and flourishing, enabling you to choose from a wide range of AS and A level courses. Our Sixth Form is enhanced every year by a large number of our students who join us from other schools (100 in 2010). They join around 110 LGGS students who have chosen to continue into the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form at LGGS has an excellent academic reputation. In 2010, 76% of A level grades were grades A and B and 15% were at A*. The standards of teaching and learning are very high and we expect Sixth Formers to work hard and take increasingly more responsibility for their learning. This intent is supported by a student/school/home agreement. Our teachers work hard to support Sixth Form students are are always willing to give up agreat deal of their time outside of the classroom to help you. The Sixth Form experience is not purely an academic one. In the LGGS Sixth Form, you will have many opportunities to involve yourself fully in the life of the school. The range of extra-curricular activities and visits is impressive and levels of participation very high. Sixth Formers also have plenty of opportunities to benefit from our status as a Technology and Languages School, as well as from our International School Award. Thank you for your interest in LGGS. We hope that if you decide to continue your studies here, you will be happy and successful in every possible way. Mrs Jackie Cahalin, Headteacher
