Welcome to Portsmouth College
PORTSMOUTH COLLEGE Portsmouth College has been the sixth form college for Portsmouth and the surrounding area since 1984. We are a relatively small college with about 900 full-time students and offer high academic standards, extensive student support of all types and a terrific range of activities and events outside the classroom. The common theme in the comments of our students and visitors over the years has been that Portsmouth is the friendly and welcoming college whose staff make very effort to support students’ academic progress and individual ambitions. The College’s mission (see below) reflects our commitment to the city of Portsmouth and our determination to work with others to maximise local students’ future prospects. OUR COURSES About 75% of students join the College to start level 3 courses: these include AS/A levels, BTEC Nationals and NVQs at level 3. Range, variety and flexibility are features of the College’s curriculum offer; many students take four AS levels in their first year but others combine AS levels with the more vocational BTEC qualifications and NVQs. A full programme of level 2 courses is available for those students who need to build on the results they have achieved at GCSE. We also offer level 1 and entry level courses for students who need to get started on the qualifications ladder. RESULTS Students have been achieving excellent results for many years. A level results have been above national average outcomes for ten consecutive years and consistently at levels which compare favourably, or more than favourably, with our local competitors. In 2006/07 Portsmouth College was rated in the top 10% of Colleges in the country for value added at A level. PROGRESSION A specialist careers service is a key part of the College’s programme of support for students. Each year more than 70% of students progress on to degree courses at universities around the country. Support is also extensive for those students seeking employment of further education with training. SPORT, PERFORMING ARTS AND OTHER ENRICHMENT The College offers two specialist ‘Academies’ for students; in Sport and in Performing Arts. Sports Academy students can enjoy additional specialist coaching, new sporting opportunities and competition to a high level locally, regionally and nationally. As a Performing Arts Academy member you will find first class opportunities in each of the major performance areas: Drama, Dance, Music in Performance, Music Technology, Singing, Technical Stagecraft, and of course Rock Challenge. Both Academies also encourage students to get involved in coaching and workshop sessions at local partner and primary schools. And there’s a great deal more as well. During your time at College you might choose to try one or two of our many enrichment courses, for example: Colour Photography, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, College Newspaper, Film Club, First Aid courses, Spanish, Italian, Sailing and many more. TRIPS AND VISITS Each of our teaching departments offers a number of trips to London, universities, conferences and events of specialist subject interest all around the south of England. Please see our website or prospectus for the full extensive list. And then of course, you could choose to join one of our exciting international trips to enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the subject. In 2006/07 students from the College travelled to Hollywood, New York, France and Germany. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Portsmouth College is a friendly, enterprising and successful College, committed to the academic and personal development of its students.
