Welcome to Holy Cross Sixth Form College

Holy Cross, founded by the Daughters of the Cross, is a Catholic sixth form college, which exists to provide a high quality education within a community based on Gospel principles.

Holy Cross gives preference to its non-vocational admissions to Catholic students but it welcomes student applications from all faiths and has a very balanced and mixed student population in this regard.

We are very proud of our reputation for academic excellence and student support, confirmed in the last Ofsted Report on the college, in which Holy Cross was classified as Grade 1, outstanding, right across the board. The inspectors commented on our "outstanding commitment to the mission and Catholic ethos" and noted that the "A level success rate placed the college in the top 10%". Because the college is based on one compact site, near the centre of Bury, we are a real community with a very supportive and safe atmosphere.

The choice of subjects is immense - far more than can be offered in most schools. The strong academic ethos and caring support our students receive is designed to inspire them as they aim for their own bright future. Holy Cross College is justifiably proud of its reputation for academic excellence. Our students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of enrichment opportunities, such as educational visits, residentials, work experience, participation in competitive/recreational sports, music/drama and involvement in charity/chaplaincy based work. Students will find plenty of opportunity to broaden their horizons at Holy Cross.

Whatever their ability students will be valued as individuals and offered a range of activities to enable them to reach their potential. We want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to excel in their subject choices and develop as individuals.

About us

Teaching, learning and assessment are at the heart of all we do at Holy Cross. We have a strong record of academic success, but as well as gaining outstanding results we want you to have an extremely positive experience of learning. Our teachers are excellent and enthusiastic and they constantly seek to encourage new and inspirational approaches to lessons and to the work you do independently. Holy Cross has a very strong tradition of enrichment and you will benefit from a wide variety of educational visits and outside speakers in addition to your normal lessons.

You will develop your skills in ways that help you to learn as individuals and to prepare you to continue your studies in Higher Education or to move into employment. We encourage you to give your views about teaching, learning and assessment and teachers use these to continue to improve lessons and other aspects of learning.
