Welcome to Strode's College

I am delighted to welcome you to Strode’s College.

Strode’s Sixth Form College is a great place to study and we are highly experienced in guiding young people onto the next step of their lives – whether it is university, a gap year or straight into employment.

We are experts in providing high quality sixth form education. We have been a Sixth Form College since 1975. During this time, many thousands of our students have achieved notable success in a wide variety of fields - academic, commercial, artistic, dramatic, sporting and in the media with some finding national recognition.

At Strode’s we provide a blend of tradition with modern facilities that support high quality teaching and learning. We are served by excellent transport links which enable students to come from a very wide area, extending throughout North West Surrey, Slough, Windsor and West London.

I very much hope that you will choose to visit us at one of our Open Evenings to find out more about courses and to meet staff and current students. You can join the growing number of young people who believe that Strode’s is the right place for their sixth form education.

My colleagues and I look forward to meeting you!

Rowan Cookson

About us

Your journey at Strode’s is just beginning and along the way you will face new challenges, develop your potential and achieve your goals.

Sixth Form College life is exciting but comes with greater individual responsibility. You will flourish in a more adult environment where mutual respect is paramount. Strode’s can help you, from your first enquiry for advice on courses to progression on to your next career steps.

Strode’s can provide you with a fresh start. We are a small/medium sized College with around 1,100 students aged 16-18. We can offer you an extensive range of courses where most combinations of subjects are possible. We set very high expectations of our students and in return we offer exceptional support from our well qualified, experienced and dedicated staff. We encourage all our students to develop their self-confidence, fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions in a supportive and friendly environment.

Strode’s is the largest provider of A Level education in north west Surrey. We offer 32 subjects at A Level and a full range of Level 3 BTECs. Intermediate (Level 2) courses are also available, as well as a variety of enrichment courses.

As a student at Strode’s College you will have a personalised timetable and you will follow an individual learning programme designed to fulfil your aims and aspirations. You will learn alongside your teachers and peers and will be encouraged to develop your individuality and achieve your potential. Whilst you will spend about half of your time in lessons, you will also have some periods which you will need to use for self-managed study, including preparing for lessons, coursework, assignments and reviewing your learning. Staff are on hand in our Learning Centre to help you develop your skills.

We expect you to work independently for an average of five hours per week for each subject you are studying. We encourage you to spend about half your independent study time in College. You can access our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) either at College using a College computer, using the College’s wi-fi network, on your own laptop or mobile phone, at home, or in a public library.

We provide high quality information, advice and guidance through our careers service and tutorial system to assist you to progress to Higher Education, an apprenticeship or employment.

Facilities available

We offer a blend of traditional and modern facilities. Recently we have invested in our science facilities as well as high quality teaching areas and social spaces.

LEARNING CENTRE (LC) Strode’s Learning Centre (LC) is a large, open plan study area. There are many computers, online journals, newspapers, magazines, DVDs and books, as well as a variety of e-resources. Most of the online resources can be accessed from home via the internet. There are a large number of individual study spaces and networked computers which are available on an open access ‘drop-in’ basis and these are divided into silent, quiet and group study areas to suit all learning needs.

IT SUITES Strode’s is constantly developing its IT facilities, with fast broadband, new infrastructure and technology. Students always have access to relevant IT resources with free wireless access so you can bring in your own mobile devices and get online anywhere in the College.

SCIENCE LABS The College has invested in its specialist science building which now boasts five new large state-of-the-art science teaching and learning facilities.

PERFORMING AND CREATIVE ARTS Our facilities include two Drama studios, a Music suite with a digital recording studio and a suite of Apple Mac computers.

ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIOS We have four large Art studios including a Textiles facility, a Photography dark room and studio. In addition, we offer a Design studio, workshop and digitalised computer rooms for Media and Film.

SPORTS AND FITNESS Sport at Strode’s benefits from a great range of facilities. A large sports field provides extensive football and rugby pitches and netball and tennis courts. A well-equipped fitness suite is situated next to our large, indoor sports hall and is available all day for students to train in or to help you relax outside of your academic studies.

STUDENT CENTRE Our Student Centre houses Student Services, where you can seek advice, guidance and support on all aspects of College life. The centre contains our spacious cafe, which serves meals throughout the day where you can sit, relax and meet friends between lessons.

Additional support

TUTORIAL SUPPORT Part of your programme of study includes attending tutorials that meet weekly as a group and every half term on a one to one basis. This will support you to stay on track and reach your goals.

WORKING WITH PARENTS AND CARERS At Strode’s we believe that working together with students and their parents and carers is key to our students’ success. We encourage parents and carers to be fully involved and communicate regularly with the College - our door is always open. Parents and carers are invited to College events including ‘meet the tutor’ and a ’review day’ to discuss a student’s progress and how you can help to maximise success with their studies. We conduct two parent/carer surveys each year to formally hear your opinions and views. Parents and carers have access to our online information, including attendance reports, via the Parents’ Portal.

SUPPORT 4 LEARNING Our Support 4 Learning team welcomes applications from students with learning needs or disabilities. They provide expert help with transition from school or home learning to College. Based in our Learning Centre, they can offer a quiet, calm space and can support you with dyslexia and dyspraxia, support time management, revision skills, essay writing support and assistive technology and exam access and arrangements.

COUNSELLING SERVICE We all need someone to talk to and our experienced Counsellors are here to offer a professional, confidential counselling service. We are here for the times when something has happened which stops you being yourself and reaching your potential; we will listen without judgement so that you can find some answers for yourself and begin to move forward again.

YOUR SAFETY AND WELLBEING We have effective arrangements in place to safeguard your health and safety at College which includes carrying out enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks on all our staff. All students are issued with ID cards which must be carried at all times. You can talk to our safeguarding officers at any time if you have a concern about your own safety or wellbeing.
