Welcome to ProCo!

We are a training provider in Wigan, that offers young people something different to college. Our main aim is to help young people, age 16-24 years-old, into employment by helping them gain the skills they need for the workplace.

ProCo is dedicated to giving learners the best possible experience during their training. All our tutors are fully-qualified and have experience within their trade area. Our workshops are fully-equipped our learners have the right tools and equipment.

We also have a Leaner Services team, who can provide one-to-one support, as well as an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer who will offer careers advice during the course.

Study Programme

Our Study Programme is a full-time course for 16-18 year-olds to gain a qualification and the right skill set to progress onto further study or employment.

The course is split into four sections: vocational training, employability and Functional skills (if required), work placement.

Vocational training

Learners will attend vocational sessions to work towards an accredited qualification in one of the following areas:

  • Animal care
  • Construction
  • Motor Vehicle

Functional Skills

Learners who achieve a GCSE grade C or above in maths and English will be exempt from Functional Skills.


Learners will work towards a City & Guilds qualification in employablity skills. They will also gain valuable support in skills needed to search for and secure a job for example, CV writing and interview skills.  

Work Placement

Every learner will be expected to complete a work placement. The work placement gives learners the confidence needed to go into the world of work and really make a mark. Successful work placements have led past learners to secure an apprenticeship or full time employment with the company.



We offer two types of apprenticeships:

  • Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeships
  • Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a vocational, work-based programme that demonstrates compentence and knowledge.

An apprenticeship is made up of:

  • Competence (VCQ- Vocational Competence Qualification)
  • Knowledge (VRQ- Vocationally Related Qualfication)
  • Life Skills
  • Employment Right & Responsibilities


In order to show they are competent at the job, the Apprentice will complete on-the-job training and practical assessments in the workplace.


The Apprentice will comlete theory work and sit exams to prove their knowledge of the subject area.

Employment Rights & Responsibilties

The Apprentice will complete work on employment rights & responsibilities including: health & safety and customer rights.

Life Skills

The life skills section includes: creative thinking, reflective learning, team work, self-management.

Facilities available

All our sites are fully-equipped to reflect the real life setting of a professional workplace.

Our Wigan Skills Centre site is based on Prescott Street in Wigan. 

Wigan Skills Centre houses a motor vehicle garage, equipped with cars and tools to reflect a working garage.

We also have joinery, brickwork, plumbing and plastering workshops which reflect the professional working environments.

We also have a built-in animal unit which is home to a number of specicies of animals such as rabbits, guiena pigs, hamsters, degus and rats. We also have a reptile section which is home to our corn snakes and bearded dragons. 


Additional support

Learner Services Team

We are committed to giving our learners a happy and enjoyable experience whilst at ProCo. Our dedicated Learner Services Team are always on hand to give one-to-one support, advice and guidance to learners.

Our Learner Service Offers will have regular reviews with learners to make sure they are making good progress, set targets during the course and offer support with any issues they may have.

Our Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Officer will offer careers advice during the course and will provide each learner with a careers action plan.

At ProCo we organise a range of activities for learners, as we want our learners to have every opportunity to achieve.

International work placements

We give learners the opportunity to work aboard. ProCo works in partnership with 'Everything is Possible', a not-for-profit organisation providing internatiional opportunities for young people thorugh a European International Funded Programme.

Past learners have worked at a cat sanctuary in Malta, a donkey sanctuary in Aruba and a construction company in Sweden.

Guest Speakers

We organise a range of guest speaker for our learners to find out about job opportunities in their chosen subject area and a chance to meet people working in the industry.

Typical guest speakers include:

  • RSPCA inspector
  • Zoo keepers
  • Managers at national construction companies
  • Motor vehicle garage owners
  • Salon managers
  • Independent beauticians and hairdressers
  • Business leaders

Mock Interview days

Our dedicated Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Officer organises Mock Interview Days for all our learners to attend.

Learners have the opportunity to be interviewed by local employers and ProCo board members so that they can experience real interview situations.

As part of the day, we organise a careers fair for learners to find out about future training and employment opportunities after finishing their course at ProCo.  



Learner success

  • Josh, Motor Vehicle Level 2 Study Programme
    Josh completed a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Study Programme and has secured a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle and Maintenance Repair at Victoria Garage, Leigh.
    Geoff Weston, Aftersales Manager at Victoria Garage, said: "Josh is a fantastic apprentice; he is enthusiastic, willing to learn and has a genunine interest in cars."
  • Bobby, Joinery Level 2 Study Programme
    Bobby left ProCo with 8 qualifications, completed a two week work placement in Sweden and has secured a full time job with Wigan construction company, SAM Joinery.
  • Ryan Lawrence, Animal Care Level 2 Study Programme
    Ryan gained an apprenticeship at Doodles Doggie Day Care, in Standish, after he completed a work placement at the company. Ryan is now completing a Level 3 Animal Care Apprenticeship.
  • Connor, Motor Vehicle Level 2 Study Programme
    Connor is now completing an apprenticeship at Trevor Jones Garage after he impressed during his work placement at the company and successfully completed the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Study Programme.

      Our Wigan Skills Centre is located a few minutes walk from Wigan town centre. With excellent transport links the learning centre, on Prescott Street, is easily accessible.

      House in the learning centre is motor vehicle garage, fully-equied with a range of cars, machinery and tools.

      ProCo's brickwork, plastering, plumbing and joinery workshops are also located at the centre.

      The Montrose Skills Hub is a learning centre for our Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing learners.

      Our centre, located on Montrose Avenue, is home to 26 different species of animals and reptiles. We have a reptile house and an Urban Farm which houses farm stock inlcuding alpacas, sheep and smaller animals such as rabbits, gerbils and hamsters.
