Welcome to Consett Academy

The Academy finds inspiration from its stewardship of such an iconic building and facilities and, in turn, seeks to inspire excellence and fulfil potential for all associated with it.

Our abiding passion is for all students to be nurtured as uniquely talented individuals, finding fulfilment through their learning and the development of their intellectual, creative, physical and emotional capabilities.

We aim for our students to develop moral integrity and become responsible global citizens. We aim to instil values in our students such as aspiration, achievement, confidence, resilience and commitment. We therefore encourage them to develop a strong sense of responsibility towards each other and to those beyond their immediate community.

The pursuit of academic excellence is crucially important, but the learning experience for Consett Academy students is not confined to the classroom. We are fully committed to the idea of an all-round education where personal development is valued as well as examination success. Learning is at the heart of everything that we do and, from the moment students arrive in Year 7, they are encouraged to think critically about the world in which they live, to be innovative in their thinking, responsive to each others’ needs and to express their ideas in a range of imaginative ways.

The educational experience at Consett Academy brings change, challenge and opportunity: a student’s personal response to these goes a long way to determining their quality of life after leaving school. Consett Academy inspires excellence by its very nature, and those who work here seek to fulfil the potential of all participants in our unique and remarkable educational community.

We are proud of our students and if you take the opportunity to come and meet us all, as I sincerely hope you will, we believe you will see why.

About us

In September 2012 we opened our doors to the first cohort of Post 16 students.  This year we saw our numbers triple with our new intake of Year 12 students studying over 15 different academic ‘A’ Level subjects.

The Sixth Form Centre is based on our North Campus and students have a dedicated area separate to the rest of the Academy.  There is a dedicated resource centre, social area, dedicated work areas to enable students to work independently and collaboratively throughout the day, all equipped with IT facilities and WIFI access, as well as Sixth Form specialist teaching rooms.

At Consett Academy Sixth Form we believe that every student deserves the very best.  This can only be achieved through standards of excellence, delivered by dedicated teachers providing stimulating learning, personal tutoring and guidance.  We also value our student’s opinions, evidenced by our student committees allowing you to shape the Sixth Form and your future.  All lessons are delivered by specialist subject teachers providing high quality teaching and learning to all students.

It is vitally important to offer students opportunities beyond their academic courses and as such, Consett Academy Sixth Form emphasise enrichment, citizenship and personal development.  This includes fundraising and charity work.

Additional support

Consett Academy serves to meet the needs of all students. We currently work with students with a wide variety of needs including those with:

  •  Cognition and Learning Needs
  •  Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties
  •  Communication and Interaction Needs
  •  Sensory and/or Physical Needs

Pupil assessment is on-going and vital in the support and development of our students, informing practice and provision. Additional to subject assessment all students are assessed for basic literacy and cognition levels at the beginning of year 7. All assessments can be used as an initial referral to the SEND team. Consett Academy applies the ‘Assess, Plan, Do & Review’ process for all students with identified concerns or needs. It is important that this process is done hand in hand with pupils, family and other external agents or professionals, where the young person is central to the process.

Consett Academy places responsibility for effective teaching and learning of all Academy students, including SEND, firmly with the classroom teacher, reflecting the principle that SEND is a whole Academy issue.
