About us

Cheadle & Marple Sixth Form College is one of the largest and most successful specialist Sixth Form Colleges in the country. The College offers a wide range of academic, vocational and work-based courses for school leavers of all abilities and ambitions.

Students are respected and treated as individuals within an open, friendly and adult learning environment with hundreds annually progressing to successful careers and universities all over the UK and abroad.

The College also offers a vibrant programme for adult learners of all ages and shares the national vision to help enable people to improve their employment and career prospects. The breadth of occupational training on offer, for example, includes Apprenticeships, NVQs and range of short courses.

The full and part-time courses for adults in the wider community include ACCESS (an alternative route to university for those with few qualifications) and accredited options in Gardening & Horticulture, Fashion, Counselling, Languages, Basic Skills and ICT. A wide variety of general interest and leisure courses is also available.

The College has been awarded the Matrix Standard for its Information, Advice and Guidance services and been successful in its bid to become a National Skills Academy for the provision of Sports Development and Leisure Operations. The College has also achieved the 'Training Quality Standard' - an assessment framework designed to recognise and celebrate the best delivery of training and development solutions.

Facilities available

Both campuses offer a friendly welcome and an adult learning environment for all students. Although each campus has its own unique personality and atmosphere both enjoy the same high quality facilities and services.

Most subjects enjoy their own learning space and specialist resource. Art, Design and Photography, for example, have light and space in abundance, Science and Languages enjoy their own laboratories, Media their own editing suite and Film Studies benefits from its own 52 seat Cinema. The Travel Shops are run by staff and students as fully operational travel agencies.

The impressive facilities for the Performing Arts includes fully equipped theatre spaces with retractable seating, rehearsal spaces and, at Marple, a large dance studio and music suite.

The purpose built Student Centres at both campuses are real hives of activity and accommodate a number of activities and functions which include Curriculum Administration, Senior Tutors, Student Liaison, Learner Records and Employer Liaison. Tutorials, seminars and other meetings are held and the Careers area is particularly busy during university applications time.

The Heartbeat Award refectories and snack bars offer a wide range of food and drink in a healthy and friendly social environment. The various student lounges and seating areas contribute to the adult, relaxed atmosphere.

Both campuses have extensive grass pitches for both training and matches. In addition, Cheadle has an all-weather playing surface and at Marple the nearby Woods Lane complex offers quality pitches as well as a Pavilion for changing and social functions.

The Leisure Centre at each campus consists of a large well equipped Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, changing rooms and extensive playing fields. The large Sports Hall caters for the majority of indoor sports and the bright and attractive Fitness Suites have a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines providing students the opportunity for a full work out.

Both campuses are accessible for wheelchair users.

Additional support

Our comprehensive Learning Support is tailored to the individual needs of students and provides the additional support that some students need to learn effectively. The range of specialist help includes study skills, 1:1 support, support for the sensory impaired, dyslexia specialist teaching, specialist equipment, learning mentors, classroom assistance and exam support.

A recent Ofsted Inspection identified the following key strengths of this area of the College's provision:

  • students make good progress
  • the standard of students work is high
  • one to one support is well planned
  • support lessons are well paced
  • there is a good rapport between students and staff
  • students are enthusiastic about their progress
  • students are very positive - one remarked that learning support was 'fantastic'
  • there are good action plans for improvement

The College also has a sensitive, supportive and confidential Counselling service to help and support students with the range of issues from minor difficulties to more severe problems. Counsellors are professionally qualified and experienced and are in place to listen, support and understand students without passing judgment on them. Information about the College's Counselling service is available from Reception and from Personal Tutors.

Learning Mentors work with students and help them to address any barriers to learning that might exist. They bridge academic and pastoral support roles with the aim of ensuring that individuals engage more effectively in learning and achieve appropriately. Students of all abilities can underachieve and the Learning Mentors help these students to identify and address what is getting in the way of their learning. These barriers can be wide ranging and often very personal to the individual student.

Professional Careers and Guidance staff provide expert individual advice, arrange university trips, visiting speakers, find vacancies, organise taster courses and practice interviews and keep the extensive Careers Library up to date. There is a post examination results day advice service and Connexions Advisors are also available at both campuses.

Student Welfare helps ensure everyone is part of the College community. The 16-19 Bursary fund offers financial support and can help with exam fees, transport costs, fieldtrips and the costs of specialist equipment etc. Assistance can also be provided in case of a sudden emergency.  Each application is considered on an individual basis and is dependant on personal circumstances.  For further details and an application form please look at the college web-site, www.camsfc.ac.uk.

We celebrate diversity and our doors are open to all those who will benefit from what we have to offer. We treat every student with dignity and respect in an atmosphere that promotes learning and recognises the individual and the need to promote equal opportunities.

The elected Student Union is the student's voice in the College. The Union’s elected officials ensure student views are heard and encourage participation in student societies and activities including charity work and reunions.

There is a three-way partnership between the student, parents and the College and we encourage regular contact with home. We have regular Consultation Evenings and Progress Reviews which help the student and their family monitor the learning process. We want you to succeed and enjoy the fruits of your success.
