Welcome to Sir John Lawes School

A very warm welcome.

For over 70 years Sir John Lawes School has been delivering an outstanding education for all students in our care and combining the best of traditional values with the very latest in teaching methods and technologies.

Our National Teaching School status reflects the importance we place on recruiting and developing the very highest-quality staff in all areas of the organisation. Our 4th consecutive Artsmark Gold award demonstrates the emphasis we place on creativity for all students and our position as a National Support School, shows how strongly we believe in sharing good practice to bring about school improvement.

We are also very aware of our responsibilities to the wider community and awards such as our Oxfam Lead School status are evidence of our students’ awareness of the role they play as global citizens.

About us

SJL Sixth Form is a vibrant community of students and teachers committed to achieving excellence in everything we do.  As a Sixth Form community, we take great pride in all our achievements and I hope that this booklet will give you just a little taste of what a special place SJL Sixth Form really is.

At SJL we are committed to offering you not only the highest possible quality of teaching, but also the personalised support and guidance that will allow you to reach your goals. Both I and my dedicated team of sixth form leaders and tutors are here to support you though all your studies in a spirit of trust and mutual respect and in an environment where learning is fun.

It is a central characteristic of our community that the high expectations we have of our students are matched by the high expectations our students have of themselves.  If your expectations match ours, I would be delighted to hear from you.  I can guarantee that in return we can offer you a highly enjoyable and memorable two years where your academic ambitions will be met in a stimulating atmosphere of care and support.

Facilities available

The Sixth Form Centre is a purpose built building providing a comfortable study area with computers, a silent study room and four dedicated Sixth-Form classrooms, two of which are fully furnished with computers. We also have a designated eating area for the use of Sixth Form students at break and lunchtime.  You will be making the decision to apply for the Sixth Form with the knowledge that it involves hard work and commitment.  We will support you in this by providing excellent facilities and a support network of dedicated teachers.

With our fantastic Science and Media Arts specialisms, all students have the opportunity to use brand new Science and Media facilities both in and out of lessons. With state-of-the-art Apple Macs suites, computers and interactive whiteboards in every room, a new cinema as well as the outstanding teaching that was recognised by Ofsted, all our Sixth Form students can fulfil their potential.

Additional support

The transition from Year 11 into Year 12 might seem like a huge leap, but with all the support and help from the Sixth Form Team, everybody adapts really quickly. Subject Teachers also go the extra mile to nurture potential and talent. During that stressful time of applying to university, teachers and tutors are there to help with the difficult decisions. We are very proud that SJL Sixth Form students are extremely successful in their transition from Year 13 into Higher Education with the vast majority of students gaining a place at their first choice university.

Each student is allocated to a Tutor Group and your Tutor will see you regularly to discuss your progress both formally and informally. Sixth Form Tutors are the first point of contact between parents and the school. Progress reports are issued towards the end of the Autumn Term and again before Easter. A full Parents' evening is held towards the end of the Autumn Term and parents will be contacted at other times if there are issues to be discussed.  The Head and Deputy Heads of Sixth Form are available most mornings from 8.00am for meetings with parents if you need to make an appointment.
