Welcome to Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy. This is an 11-18 comprehensive academy for girls situated in Handsworth, Birmingham, with a thriving sixth form. Ofsted judged us as good with outstanding features in January 2011.

About us

Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is very diverse, educating girls who represent a wide range of different cultures from around the world. Coupled with our history of continual improvement is an ethos based upon mutual respect. Students are supported to develop respect for themselves as individuals, for others and for the studies and activities in which they are engaged. Our motto of “Aspiring for Excellence” embraces the idea that all our students can achieve success in all that they do during their time here.

Facilities available

We have eight different Learning Routes in our Sixth Form curriculum, providing a wide range of AS, A Level, Level 3 BTEC and other courses. As well as the many level 3 courses available, we also provide a wide range of opportunitites for learner who are not yet ready for a level 3 pathway.  These include pre-apprenticeships, GCSE only routes and GCSE with vocational courses. 

In KS3 students follow the national curriculum to prepare them for GCSE and BTEC courses in KS4. This is supported by good quality information, advice and guidance to help students make informed choices for KS4, the Sixth Form and beyond.

Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy provides a high quality education through inspiring teaching and excellent support. We place great emphasis on teaching and learning, ensuring that what happens in the classroom is enjoyable as well as enabling the students to make good progress and achieve. Learning in the classroom is supported by a flourishing enrichment programme where students can take up opportunities to develop their social and personal skills.

 

Learner success

We are pleased to have had good exam results which have led to 100%  success rate of students achieving university places over the last five years.

    • Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy is situated within a large green site with playing fields at the front and back of the main buildings.  Unlike many new schools, classrooms at HWGA are spacious, and most teachers have their own rooms and are accessible to support students.  Much refurbishment has taken place over the last two years.  Recent changes have included a refurbished library, refurbished and extended Sixth Form Learning Area, five brand new Science laboratories with refurbishment of the supporting preparatory rooms, a refurbished MFL department and refurbished Health and Social Care rooms.  In addition, the school is equipped with a modern  IT network including a cutting edge wireless cloud network throughout the school.  All Sixth Form students are supplied with their own laptops for study within the academy and at home.  The school has two dedicated Performing Art Suites, a Dance Studio and a large hall with high quality lighting rigs, and mechanised seating that provides a flexible performance venue.
