Thomas Rotherham College aspires to be a centre of educational excellence for Rotherham and South Yorkshire where students from local communities achieve advanced skills and qualifications and join together to pursue lifelong learning in a welcoming, supportive and safe environment.

Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to attend one of our Open Evenings where they can chat to staff and students to find out about the College in general and the specific courses on offer.  Our Student Services and Careers teams will also be available on the evenings to provide information on travel, financial support, enrichment, careers advice and work experience opportunities.

About us

Thomas Rotherham College is a Sixth Form College with over 1500 students. 90% of these students are studying Advanced level courses, which are offered in a wide range of subjects. These courses are mainly A levels, both in subjects studied at school and in ones which are not usually offered at GCSE, and also include BTEC courses.

There is an Intermediate level programme offering courses for students who wish to improve on their qualifications before moving on to Advanced study or employment and training.

TRC is committed to providing high quality teaching and student support to enable students to achieve to the highest levels and to fulfil their individual potential.  .  

The College is also committed to providing excellent facilities and an extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities.

We have some very famous Alumni (former students) including MP Justine Greening, TV presenter James May and England International Jamie Vardy, to name but a few! 

Located near to the centre of Rotherham on a most attractive site on Moorgate Road, the College attracts students from throughout the Rotherham district and beyond.

Facilities available

TRC provides well equipped teaching rooms and commual areas for its students.

Facilities include: a lecture theatre, specialist technologies for media, language labs, science labs, art rooms, performing arts studio, music studios and a prayer space.

TRSports is our on-site sports centre complete with gym, dance studio and full size sports hall.  There are extensive playing fields, together with a full size, all weather, floodlight, artificial pitch. 

The Courtyard is our student social and dining area with both cafe and full canteen service.  This is the place where you can relax and meet your friends.  Many events take place here throughout the year.

Our two-storey Learning Resource Centre has an impressive range of IT facilities, audio visual equipment, books and newspapers.

There are several IT suites - all computers have access to our student portal and the internet.  There is Wi-Fi throughout the College. 

The campus is situated in superb grounds with plenty of outdoor space, which students are free to enjoy. 

We also have car-parking available with priority permits going to those students with a long journey to College. 

There are also loads of activities and events to get involved in during your time at TRC.  These can help you to meet new friends and enhance your university or job application.

YOUR OWN PROGRESS TUTOR

As a student you will have your own Progress Tutor who you meet with regularly in both whole group sessions and on an individual basis.  Your Tutor will help you settle into college and support you personally along with monitoring your academic progress, coaching you to success and aiding in planning for your future.

 

LEARNING MENTORS

Learning Mentors can give you support, advice, understanding and encouragement about issues that are important to you and are affecting your work in college.  Mentors are positive role models who are very good at active listening.  You can talk to them about anything and they will not judge you.

 

CLASS

Our experienced team in our Centre for Learning and Study Skills are always available to provide individual help with your studies, to improve areas including essay planning, spelling and punctuation, revision techniques and organisation of work.  The team has much experience in supporting students with specific difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and visual or hearing impairment.

 

STUDENT SERVICES

The Student Services team can offer guidance on a range of services including timetable, travel and financial support.  

 

COUNSELLORS

Students do sometimes have problems for which they may need confidential help and support. Our counselling service can offer this. For example, you may have personal problems, stress related problems ­- or perhaps you just need help to make choices that are right for you.

 

CAREERS ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

Helping you to choose your next step after college.  The Careers department helps students through the university application process and in becoming job ready.

Throughout your time at TRC, careers information, advice and guidance is available from our Careers Department including via e-guidance. 

The Careers team organise lots of events including:

  • An annual Careers Fair which attracts over 50 higher education institutions, apprenticeship providers and employers.

  • A Higher Education evening event for students and parents.

  • A Job Ready event to support students applying for apprenticeships or work after college, including a mock interview with an employer.

  • Visits from a range of speakers, including university Student Ambassadors, local employers and apprenticeship providers.

  • Practical help on applying for jobs, writing CVs and application forms and on interview techniques.

  • Help with all aspects of applying to university.

 

WORK PLACEMENT

We have a great track record of providing our students with high quality work placements that are increasingly valued by employers and universities. Placements can be organised to suit your career aspirations and course requirements. 

 

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The College has Student Bursary Funds available to help students who might be experiencing difficulty with meeting the cost of their learning.  See www.thomroth.ac.uk for details. 

 

Learner success

In 2018 our overall pass rate was 98% with 26 subjects achieving 100% pass rates!  

The college offers excellent progression to competitive higher education courses, including Oxbridge and the Russell Group,  prestigious apprenticeships and high quality employment. 

TRC students have a 10% better than national chance of progressing to achieve a First Class degree (HESA).

    • The College is situated on Moorgate in Rotherham, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Rotherham.  Buses leave the central Rotherham Interchange every 10 minutes and the journey takes approx. 5 minutes.

      The College also has on-site permit parking for students, with priority given to students with the greatest distance to travel.
