Welcome to Howard of Effingham School

The Howard of Effingham is an outstanding school.  It offers maximum opportunities for young people to develop academically and socially in an environment that is stimulating, caring and supportive.  The school sets high standards that instil values which enable students to develop into confident and responsible young adults.

The Howard has a well deserved reputation for academic excellence.  Each year our GCSE results have placed us among the top comprehensive schools in Surrey.  In the 2014 A Level examinations there was a 98.1% pass rate of which 78.7% were grade A*-C with an average 338 UCAS points per student.  These successes allowed the vast majority of our students who applied to University to secure one of their chosen places this year, including 5 students to Oxbridge.  In 2014, 89% of Year 11 students gained 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSES (and 79.5% including English and Mathematics).  There is a natural progression into the Sixth Form where the courses on offer include both traditional and vocational A Levels.

The pastoral organisation of The Howard ensures a sharp focus on the well-being and academic progress of the students.  High standards of behaviour based on respect for each other and the school environment are paramount and the House system helps to foster a real spirit of community and co-operation.  In addition, an excellent range of extra-curricular activities, trips and leadership opportunities is available for our students making The Howard a vibrant community in which all are encouraged to develop their talents to the full.

The Howard is a traditional school with a passion for innovation.  Every child matters to us; we are committed to developing well-rounded individuals with a thirst for life-long learning.  It is our ambition that every child will achieve their best and look back on their time at The Howard with fond memories and a real sense of achievement.

Additional support

The transition into Sixth From is not just centred on your academic progress and achieving your goals but also to ensure that when you leave us you are ready for your next steps whatever they may be. Every one of you is an individual to us and having watched your progress through the main part of school it is great to be able to give you the opportunities to take a lead in one of our in-school service schemes and be a role model to the younger members of our community. The Sixth Form Team is always available to discuss queries and issues and the tutorial programme ensures you can focus on your personal aspirations.

Learner success

Whether you are following A Level or BTEC courses our results are consistently amongst the best nationally in non-selective School Sixth Forms or Sixth Form Colleges. In 2016 30% of A level entries were awarding top grades (A*/A) and nearly 60% were A*-B. Ten subjects achieved 100% A*-C and the overall pass rate was 99.4%. Our teachers are experts in their subjects and with the experience of teaching at GCSE level too, they understand how to help you make that important transition to Sixth From successfully.
