Welcome to The Petchey Academy

I am proud to introduce you to our academy and hope that this website gives you a good sense of our vibrant and engaging learning community and how we inspire and support every child.

What makes the academy special?

The academy’s crest includes the Latin word ‘Excelsior’ ("ever higher") which succinctly captures our ambition for academic excellence in an environment where students are encouraged to develop their interests and talents in all areas. I strongly believe that the students are proud of their academy and value its unique character. Our sponsor, Sir Jack Petchey, gives us that distinctive character. Both students and staff follow his maxim, “If I think I can, I can” which proves an apt guide for anyone striving for excellence in their studies, extra-curricular activities and working relationships.

What is The Petchey Way?

Students have a clear set of moral values and a sense of responsibility towards the academy. Expectations of commitment to study, social responsibility and respect are encapsulated in our “Petchey Way” which reflects our ethos of nurturing traditional values in a modern world. When you visit, please ask any student what The Petchey Way means to them. Answers will range from wearing smart uniform and holding doors open for people, to working hard for the highest qualifications and successfully winning a place at a top university.

How do you inspire and support every child?

The academy is here to nurture and stimulate our students whatever their interests and ambitions. Whether they are fascinated by higher maths, music or politics, we encourage and support them to pursue their ambitions. If they are inspired by medical science, The Petchey Academy is the place for them. Our links and partnerships with teaching hospitals and universities, coupled with our Clinical Skills Lab (usually only available in universities) create a stimulating environment to explore the possibilities. However, we offer a wide range of experiences and activities through our partners such as Bloomberg which open our students' eyes to the huge number of options available outside of the medical sciences and our impartial careers guidance programme runs from Year 7 through to sixth form.

How can I learn more?

There is no better way to find out about our unique academy than to come and visit us. Members of our Student Leadership Team will be happy to discuss with you what makes The Petchey Academy such a special place.

About us

Our Vision

As an inclusive academy the focus is on each child as an individual whilst fostering a sense of belonging to a rich and diverse community. The Petchey Academy is committed to supporting every child to exceed national expectations whilst experiencing a wide and exciting range of opportunities to equip them with the skillset for a successful future as rounded, mature and confident members of modern British society.

We place great emphasis on giving our students the ability to consider and make choices in life, rather than following the crowd. We have high expectations of our students, instilling ambition not only for academic excellence (Excelsior: “ever higher”) but for success within all areas. We firmly believe in supporting and inspiring the individual to reach his/her own potential, at whatever level that may be.

Our Ethos

Our ethos, known as "The Petchey Way" is the bedrock of our academy and encapsulates our traditional British values in a modern world, revolving around the basic concepts of respect and tolerance. This is consolidated in the four Petchey P's: Politeness, Positivity, Participation and Perseverance

Our students are proud of their school and take pride in their personal achievements and academic success.

The Petchey Way also applies to staff and centres around expectations of creating an engaging learning environment that promotes respect, equality and safety.

Our History

The Petchey Academy (built on the site of the former Kingsland School) was established in 2006 by Sir Jack Petchey CBE and our sixth form: University Gateway opened in September 2011. The academy's specialism is Health, Care and Medical Science and it is named after Sir Jack Petchey and sponsored by his foundation. Established in 1999, The Jack Petchey Foundation gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25.

The Petchey Academy (TPA) is non-denominational, specialising in Health, Care and Medical Science. The academy has gained a number of awards including ECM Gold, Artsmark Gold, Inclusion Quality Mark Gold, and National Healthy School Status.

Our Patron, Sir Jack Petchey, and the Governing Body and Staff, are all extremely proud of what they have achieved in the few years since opening in September 2006. This is supported independently by our last two Ofsted inspections which highlighted strong leadership as a key to our success. We pride ourselves in our high academic and behaviour standards.

Our growing sixth form (University Gateway) offers a creative and innovative curriculum, which combines opportunities for excellence whilst working closely with universities and employers to build on the traditional sixth form teaching concept.
