Welcome to Newstead Wood School
Newstead Wood is a hard working, fun and caring school with a passion for learning and an outstanding record of achievement.
We are exceptionally proud of our students. They are bright and happy young people who enjoy being at school, each bringing unique talents to our community. Newstead students have freedom and security to be themselves, and many opportunities to follow their interests and aspirations. We know them as individuals and support them to grow as thinking young people and active citizens, ready to take positions of responsibility and leadership on leaving school.
In an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust, we encourage everyone to reach their potential.
We are a highly selective girls’ state secondary school, with a co-educational Sixth Form, close to Orpington Station. Our catchment radius covers a wide, rich range of socio-economic and ethnic areas: over 40% of students are from ethnic minorities and many of our students will be the first of their families to enter Higher Education. We welcome applications from external students to join our thriving Sixth Form.
Newstead prides itself on providing an exciting learning environment, both in terms of resources and expectations, so that each individual can flourish. We recognize the range of students’ abilities, both in terms of specific subjects and personal and social education, and try to respond, often through links with the wider community. Newstead is nationally and internationally renowned for offering the best ways to provide for the needs of very able students both through the formal curriculum and beyond – through extra-curricular and enrichment activities in particular. We have high expectations and encourage students to be self-motivated so that learning arises naturally through enquiry and research, across different subjects. We know that lively minds come to us well stocked and able to think divergently. Our staff understand very able and gifted students and encourage the appreciation and acceptance of different abilities.
Learning at Newstead is enriched through fieldwork, exchanges, conferences, lecture programmes, masterclasses and, sometimes, acceleration. There is an extensive range of extra curricular activities on both a school and House basis. Recent Sixth Form visits to Washington, New York, Italy, Greece support learning in Government and Politics and Classical Civilisations. Our Sixth Form students are encouraged to apply to become Subject Leaders and House Captains. Our Newstead Biology Society organise our evening lecture programme with speakers including Prof. Steve Jones, Dr Mike Leahy, Dr Simon Watt and Dr Nessa Carey.
We are proud of our Sixth Form, and our students have an integral role in representing the school, working with school Governors and staff, and implementing, and evaluating the progress of the School Development Plan. Senior student leaders have been active members of national and international student leadership networks, and attend the annual Asia Pacific Young Leaders Summit in Singapore, taking part in development activities and international debate.
Our expert and dedicated staff inspire our students; and our students' energy, creativity and enthusiasm inspire staff. We are proud of our students' achievements - whatever field they excel in. However, neither staff or students are complacent - constantly looking for new challenges to meet and fresh problems to solve. Newstead students have freedom and security to be themselves, and many opportunities to follow their interests and aspirations. We know them as individuals and support them to grow as thinking young people and active citizens, ready to take positions of responsibility and leadership on leaving school.
