Welcome to Caterham High School
Welcome to the Sixth Form at Caterham High School.
Whether you are a parent or a carer of a student in the Sixth Form for the first, second or third time, the Sixth Form is constantly evolving and this handbook is designed to provide you with information that covers this academic year, such as important events and term dates, and also to provide you with a crucial companion over the coming academic year.
As a member of the Sixth Form at Caterham High School, your son/daughter is joining a long established and successful Sixth Form with a strong reputation. We pride ourselves on excellence in everything we do and whilst we don’t always get it right, we look to embody the school motto ‘Getting the best from every student’.
This handbook will answer many of the questions you have about the Sixth Form. Post-16 education is very different from what your son/daughter will have experienced before; they will be expected to be more organised and independent in their studies, ultimately taking control of their own learning. The guidelines and information contained in this handbook will help guide them through this. From experience, it is also critical that students and their parents are aware from the start of the protocols and expectations that are set in the Sixth Form. Student success is largely built on a tri-partite relationship between the individual student, parent/carer and the School.
We also look to communicate in a 21st Century manner; please take a detailed look at our Sixth Form website and twitter page (@6th_CHSIlford) which we will use to keep you regularly informed.
We look forward to supporting your son/daughter over the coming year and I truly hope that they will be some of the most enjoyable and successful years of their lives.

The Sixth Form area is large and comfortably furnished, complete with its own classrooms, study area, free access computers, social area, cafeteria and toilets.
This facility is suitable for many different uses, including quiet study during lesson time, socialising during breaks and a range of clubs and activities after school. There is a warm and friendly atmosphere which helps new students feel at home very quickly. All Sixth Form students also have access to our sports facilities comprising a swimming pool, fitness centre, gym and all weather pitch.
As part of our caring ethos, all students are organised into Sixth Form Tutor groups.
The tutors meet students daily and are the first and main advisers in both academic and pastoral matters; tracking students’ progress on a monthly basis, tutors may also offer extra support and guidance. Working with the Head of Sixth Form, the tutor also writes the university or employment references.
Tutors are also able to give expert advice on such issues as study skills, option choices and careers. In addition there will always be a senior member of staff on hand in the Sixth Form area ready to give help and reassurance.
