Welcome to Harington Scheme
Harington is a friendly and successful training centre. We specialise in working with people of different abilities to help them become more independent and ready to work or go to college.
It is a small centre and this allows us to run the training in small groups and to really get to know our learners well. We always try hard to make sure that everyone gets the right help so that they can make progress, get qualifications and move on to work or a college course that will really suit them and will help in the future.
Every learner is different, has different experiences and goals and therefore our Skills Pathways are flexible and designed to meet a wide range of needs from Entry Level to Level One.
Each learner will have an individual programme designed to help them to achieve qualifications and to progress toward greater independence, employment or further education.
Harington is a registered charity and a limited company operating as part of the voluntary sector.
Harington was founded in 1980 and is set in 1.8 acres of green oasis in Highgate. Our learners come from many different boroughs to follow our Foundation Pathways in Retail, Horticulture and the Choices Pathway for those who have not quite made up their minds what career path to follow.
As Harington courses begin and end throughout the year, young people can apply for a place at Harington at any time of the year, not necessarily having to wait for September to start on a course.
Learners at Harington are encouraged to do work experience, to build up the skills needed to pass qualifictions and get a job. Learners have support from a jobcoach to plan travel arrangements, help with travel training with individually tailored support to suit their needs to help them settle in with the employer.
Harington has 1.8 acres of very attractive green space, the classrooms have garden views and make a lovely setting for learning. There are fixed computers in the IT suite as well as laptops that can be used within any of the classrooms as appropriate. Horticulture learners often use the greenhouse or one of the pollytunnels as a learning space, along with the vegetables plots, flower beds, walled garden and wild life area with ponds. Retail learners have lots of options when planning their enterprise projects, and can use the Harington Produce Stall to develop their skills alongside their work experience placements. Harington has excellent links with employers, who offer learners work experience placements to help develop the skills employers are looking for, with regular reviews to make sure that everyone gets lots of feedback. The Job Coach support in the workplace gives all learners the opportunity to become confident in their placement.
At the beginning of the course we will get to know you and find out what support you need.
