Welcome to City of London Academy, Southwark

Welcome to the City of London Academy (Southwark) - a dynamic and high achieving Academy.

The City of London Academy is a vibrant and innovative educational community in the heart of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and is sponsored by the City of London Corporation.

Passionate about raising aspirations and supporting each student to achieve their potential, we provide a high quality education with an added focus on Business & Enterprise and Sport to students aged 11-18.

Our Academy has an excellent Sixth Form that is regarded as one of the top Sixth Form Centres in Southwark. The majority of our students choose to remain in the Sixth Form following their GCSEs and can be confident of their progression to leading universities, including Oxbridge, apprenticeships or employment.

Our academic, vibrant community and emphasis on developing the whole student makes us a popular and over-subscribed Academy.

In 2016 CoLA has matched its best ever GCE results in its history and further improved on our best ever GCSE results for the second year running. At GCE, the pass rate remained at 100%, with 71% gaining A*- C.  Vocational results were also excellent this year.  Students continue to enjoy success gaining places at Russell Group and top UK universities. 98% of our students achieved their first choice university place, an unprecedented figure. Every student from our academy who applied to go to university got a place.

Opening in September 2017, we have a new purpose built Sixth Form Centre at 399 Rotherhithe New Road. This will provide a specialist sixth form campus where students will learn in state of the art facilities. This will take our Sixth Form offer to a whole new level, as we embrace the latest teaching technology on a specialist sixth form only campus.

CoLA celebrated a further 8% increase on last year’s GCSE results, with the best ever results of 76% of students achieving 5 A*-C grades including English and maths.  This placed us in the top 10% of schools nationally for student attainment. Overall 83% of students received 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, with great results in subjects including the essential core areas of Maths, English and Science.  Top achieving students gained between 9-11 A*/A grades each.

A significant achievement was also recorded by Pupil Premium students, with 72% achieving 5 A*-C, including English and maths.  91% students made expected progress with English and 77% in Maths.   This is an outstanding achievement when compared to the national average for Pupil Premium.

We have been an International School since 2011, the City of London Academy (Southwark) was also awarded Investors in Careers (Gold) for the exceptional work in supporting students' personal development. We work closely with businesses, the local community and our family of schools, to bring educational and social success to all members of our learning community.

We were awarded the Arts Mark Gold award for the second time in 2013, which recognises our outstanding creative and performing arts provision at the Academy.

Our Inclusion Unit continued its success by retaining its Inclusion Quality Mark Centre of Excellence, being one of a handful of schools in London to achieve this prestigious honour.

We received three national awards in 2015 for our outstanding work with our students for their GCSE attainment, progress and our work with students in receipt of pupil premium making us one of only two schools in SE England to do so.

The Academy created a formal partnership with Redriff Primary School in 2013 and has increased its school roll to 240 students in Year 7, to accommodate the partnership and increased demand for places from the local community.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, with small class sizes tailored to our students’ needs. Guided choice at Key Stage 4 helps students access the pathway that is best suited to them.

Our thriving Sixth Form offers AS, A Level and vocational courses together with a full enrichment programme that includes the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme.

Our holistic curriculum supports the spiritual, moral and social development of our students.  Our specialist subjects of Business & Enterprise and Physical Education, alongside our links to the City of London Corporation and our sister schools offering a unique private – public school partnership, which further enhance students’ educational experience.

The Academy’s distinctive offer provides students with a solid foundation for success as confident and respectful young adults.

The Academy offers an extensive range of clubs, including Young Enterprise, expressive arts and debating. Opportunities also include CISCO Networking, NASA Space Design, and cyber mentor training in partnership with beatbulling.org.

Students enjoy a wide range of sports and leisure opportunities, including competitive sport in-school, locally and nationally. We are one of just ten Academies in the UK to gain Basketball Academy status from the English Basketball Association.  2016 was a particularly successful year for the Basketball Academy, with both the U17 Girls and Boys Team becoming runners up in the National Schools Champions.

The Academy’s Head Girl and Boy lead a thriving Student Voice committee. Working together to represent students’ views across the school, they deliver an inspirational programme of social and charitable activities.

We look forward to welcoming our students and their parent/carer, prospective students and parents/carers, VIPs and guests to the Academy and to continuing the excellent achievements in the coming academic year.
