Welcome to Fortismere School
We have an outstanding and popular sixth form, with students joining us from a wide geographical area. Our students usually study four AS level subjects in Year 12 and, three or four A2 subjects in Year 13 for the full A level award.
Our impressive range of subjects attracts high numbers in traditional A levels, as well as specialist areas like Further Maths, German and Economics. We also offer a small number of Vocational Qualifications.
We support our students’ academic progress by a system of target setting and monitoring. We also provide excellent guidance for students, as well as additional mentoring for those making Oxbridge applications or preparing for BMAT and UKCAT (medical) or Law entrance exams. The vast majority progress on to university and a sophisticated guidance system ensures that they are well advised in their decision-making.
We have a strong focus on school leadership and on students taking responsibility for their progress. We also have lots of extra-curricular opportunities that help our students become confident and articulate young adults.
Fortismere is a high achieving and dynamic mixed comprehensive school, highly regarded and very well supported by the local Muswell Hill community that it serves. With a strong focus on academic excellence for all, as well as diverse cultural enrichment, the school recently featured as one of the Top 20 comprehensives in the country in a Times newspaper article and is heavily over-subscribed in all years.
On September 1st, Fortismere became a Foundation school, as well as taking on a new joint specialist status in Maths/Computing with Music. These exciting developments will form part of a range of strategies that will help to raise standards even higher and to enrich and increase opportunities for our students. We also have a second specialism in Modern Foreign Languages, which will incorporate the teaching of Mandarin from September to complement the European languages of French, German and Spanish. Previous specialist status and a very active parents' group have enabled extensive investment in 21st century hi-tech equipment and learning resources, including a brand new Science block and Sports Centre, fully networked ICT and Digital Sound Studio, an all-weather Sports pitch and a dedicated dance studio. All of these benefits spread across the whole curriculum, with a dynamic approach to the whole business of learning. An increasingly international perspective is leading to new links with schools in Africa and China, supported by the introduction of Mandarin alongside traditional European languages. With a Sixth Form of 450 students, the school attracts applications from over 500 post-16 students each year.
Most of our Year 13 leavers go on to university and many gain places at top Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, studying in highly competitive areas like Medicine, Natural Sciences, Law and English. Examination results are consistently excellent, in comparison to other top schools, and 2007 was no exception. At KS3, 90% of our students gained level 5+ in Maths, English and Science, with 11 students scoring the maximum levels 8,7,7 at GCSE, results consistently show between 75 - 80% of students gaining 5 or more A*-C grades, and this year's target is for 40% of results to be at A*/A grade; at A level almost 60% of grades were at A or B, with 26 students gaining AAAA or AAA. We believe that excellence will be achieved by constantly challenging and raising aspirations, and by insisting that good behaviour enables great learning. Traditional values of tolerance, courtesy and respect are important at Fortismere.
We also believe in an holistic educational package that is about more than just academic success. This involves developing the whole person through confidence, student voice, responsibility and leadership; creating opportunities for students to develop their talent and creativity; capitalising on diversity, not uniformity; creating an environment of vibrancy and excitement for learning. We want Fortismere to be a place where all students can develop self belief, aim for the top, and not be afraid to chase their dreams. Our students are confident, articulate, compassionate young people. It is no surprise that Fortismere is often cited as North London's "Jewel in the Crown".
