Welcome to Springhallow Special School

About us

Springhallow School is an Ealing LA maintained day community special school for pupils aged 4-16 years. Springhallow School caters for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). All our pupils have an impairment in social understanding, language and communication, thought and behaviour. This is often referred to as the Triad of Impairment. We are committed to meeting this range of need and very much value the contribution each pupil makes towards school life. In doing so, Springhallow School fosters close working relationships between school, parents and professional bodies to meet targets, which address each pupil's needs. In the Secondary Phase - as from September 2011 - there will be five classes, with 42 pupils in total, two of which provide for the Key Stage 4 curriculum. There are 12 pupils in Key Stage 4, with 1 pupil in Secondary Gold and 11 in Secondary 3. The Secondary Gold class provides for pupils with more complex needs, requiring highly structured and more therapeutic strategies and interventions.

The ability range is very wide indeed, with pupils working from the mid P levels to National Curriculum Levels 6, 7 and 8. The majority of pupils in Key Stage 4 are however working at entry level 2 / 3. Given this ability range, Springhallow School has established very close working relationships with a nearby high school, which following on from integration work in Key Stage 3 has enabled pupils to attend for specific subject areas at Key Stage 4. Each year there are usually one or more pupils who will attend to follow GCSE’s in one or more subject areas. This has many benefits and helps to prepare pupils for post 16 choices. Accredited courses offered at Springhallow are at entry level / Level 1, inclusive of Entry Level Certificates, vocational courses, the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme at Bronze level as well as ASDAN Awards and qualifcations. Pupils currently undertake the following: AQA Entry Level Certificate Maths 4970 AQA Entry Level Certificate English 4930 AQA Entry Level Certificate Science 4948 Edexcel Entry Level Certificate Science 8938 (currently replacing AQA, 4948) OCR Entry Level Certificate ICT 3912 ASDAN AoPE (Award of Personal Effectiveness) at Level 1 ASDAN PSD (Personal and Social Development) qualification at Entry 2 or 3 ASDAN Personal Progress qualifcation at Entry 1 ASDAN Bronze Award (Entry Level) ASDAN Silver Challenge (Entry Level) ASDAN Expressive Arts (short course) Key Stage 4 is looking to develop its Foundation Learning programme and thereby revise its opportunities for accreditation and qualifcations in the coming year. In the second part of the current academic year, 1 Year 10 and 4 Year 11 pupils commenced a joint special schools link at the Ealing Diploma and Enterprise Centre (EDEC), starting to access vocational training in construction and hair and beauty. Specialist tutors at EDEC delivered units from entry level qualifcations (BTEC Award in Construction and CandG Award in Introduction to the Health and Beauty Sector).

In addition a strong emphasis is placed on developing personal and social skills as well as extending independence. Working closely with our partners – local education-business partnership, Youth and Connexions Service, Mencap etc – very much enhances these opportunities. As does the current enrichment and extended schools programme. Personalised learning is reflected in these links. This collaborative working is fundamental in assisting with transition for Key Stage 4 pupils to new post 16 settings. For some of our pupils this can present as a very significant challenge taking into consideration that they may have been in Springhallow School since a very young age.
