Welcome to Bexley Grammar School
Welcome to the exciting opportunities that our Sixth Form provides. This information aims to fill in some of the detail that you need to make informed decisions about your next steps. It is, however, only generic information, offered as a starting point. You should seek advice from the wealth of experience offered by the staff here at school and use the Information Evening (internal students) and our Open Evenings (external students) to research carefully.
Bexley Grammar School is a co-educational selective Academy of approximately 1400 students, including 0ver 500 in the Sixth Form. It draws on the top 27 to 28% ability range of students from a largely working-class catchment area. 73% of pupils from the 10 wards that contribute the greatest proportion of the school's pupils are from areas where below 13% of adults have a higher education qualification (compared to the average in England of 19.2%). 9.3% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is a relatively high percentage for a selective school. The percentages of pupils from ethnic minority households and those whose first language is not (or believed not to be) English are 43.6% and 19.5% respectively and both fall above the 60th percentile nationally. (Statistics drawn from 2015 RAISEonline data.)
We currently offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) to Sixth Form students. We have high expectations of students and yet the entry requirements to our Sixth Form are designed to encourage as many of our own students as possible to join our rich Sixth Form life and to give access to able, committed students from other schools to join them to create a thriving student body. And of course, in addition to the highest quality education on offer, all the wonderful extra-curricular life of the school continues except that it is even better now because Sixth Form students tend to be the leaders and drivers of this vibrant activity.
The International Baccalaureate is a unified programme leading to a Diploma which BGS has been delivering for over a decade. From September 2017 it will be the sole programme offered to Sixth Form students. Students follow a programme of six subjects with three studied at Higher and three at Standard Level. They follow a Theory of Knowledge course, record activities for credit under ‘Creativity Action Service’ and complete an Extended Essay. At the heart of the IB programme is an endeavour to nurture independent, creative learners with a lively curiosity about the world in which they live. Many British Universities express a preference for IB students because of the depth and breadth of their study and the life skills they bring with them to university life. And of course the IB Diploma is recognised internationally.
