Welcome to UTC Central Bedfordshire
Central Bedfordshire UTC's primary objective is to enable students to strive for excellence, in engineering, product design, manufacturing and science with likeminded colleagues in an inspirational institution, supported by expert staff and industrial colleagues, and utilising cutting edge, industry standard technologies.
The UTC provides a combination of tried and trusted methods as well as an innovative curriculum offer that serves the needs of learners and sponsors. It provides each young person with qualifications and skills across the educational range that clearly focus them on progression through to apprenticeships, employment, further or higher education.
A typical Central Bedfordshire UTC student will be one who is active in shaping their own future, whether that is in industry or at University. They are also passionate about, and committed to, gaining high level skills and qualifications. All of our academic subjects are partially integrated into the technical qualifications as well as employability and enterprise skills. This will ensure that young people can see the relevance of what these mean to them and to their future. We have high standards and high expectations of our students and a professional ethos in terms of work ethic, standards of attendance, behaviour, attitude and appearance.
The UTC will help create the next generation of engineers and product designers. They will work on exciting and challenging projects, developing innovative new products and processes that could change all of our lives in the future. The UTC will provide forward thinking students with a unique opportunity to get a head start in developing the skills required for an exciting and rewarding future in industry or at a University.
Central Bedfordshire UTC will occupy the former Kingsland Skills Centre in Houghton Regis. Government Ministers have awarded a multi-million pound development grant to transform the site into a centre of excellence. As well as high-tech subject specialist equipment, there will also be a newly built Product Design Centre opening in 2013.
Students will be able to benefit from learning in an inspirational environment, replicating the highest industrial standards that are endorsed by national and international employers. The refurbishment is designed to deliver the highest standards in a range of academic and technical subjects and skills. In addition to the general learning areas, there will be fully equipped technical centres ready to commence real life projects in engineering and product design. We will house a range of laboratories and resource centres using specialist ICT facilities through the building, as well as breakout areas for relaxation and private study.
We will ensure that each student has the opportunity to undertake examinations and assessments when they are ready, rather than at the end of each Key Stage, thereby ensuring students can progress at an enhanced pace in any particular area of learning. The tools will track skills in a way that makes delivering a focus on technical excellence and achieving a good range of GCSEs both efficient and easily achievable.
