Welcome to The Harvey Grammar School
Welcome to The Harvey. We are a thriving grammar school with a fine reputation for academic excellence in a caring and supportive environment. We are committed to the academic & personal development, pastoral care and welfare of all our students. Our standards and expectations are high and we try very hard to support each student throughout their time with us to ensure they make the best possible progress. OFSTED rate The Harvey as OUTSTANDING in all areas, including the Sixth Form.
‘Teaching in the sixth form is of the highest quality. Teachers have very high expectations and use their expert subject knowledge to design learning activities which engage and challenge learners. As a result, they learn very well in lessons and over time’.
Each year our students achieve some excellent A-Level results across a broad range of subjects, some of which are delivered through collaborative links with Folkestone School for Girls, our neighbouring girls’ grammar school. In 2017 68% of post 16 qualifications were awarded grades A*- B. Further details of our most recent results can be found on our web-site.
Our post-16 curriculum is comprehensive, offering at its heart, traditional A Levels alongside equivalent vocational BTEC courses.
Sixth Form & Subject entry criteria
The Harvey enrols Sixth Form students (boys only) in accordance with the criteria below.
Entry Criteria for academic programmes
GCSE grade 5 in English (Language or Literature) and GCSE grade 5 in Mathematics
Entry criteria for individual subjects must be met in order to access those courses
Sixth Form Programmes of Study
For an academic programme of study students choose three A Level subjects and must have met the specific entry criteria for each.
A student who has not met the entry criteria for a full academic programme, may access a vocational programme which includes one A Level and a double-award BTEC qualification, so long as the entry criteria for these courses is met.
Our Sixth Form Brochure includes further details about our entry criteria. In the brochure our curriculum guide includes information about each of the post-16 courses we offer. The brochure can be found on our website (address below).
Sixth Form students have an important role to play as senior leaders in our school. OFSTED noted that ‘The conduct of sixth formers around the school is exemplary and they provide excellent role models for younger pupils. Sixth formers are mature, tolerant and respectful of difference. They have a very good understanding of how to look after themselves and be safe’. We expect all Sixth Form students to make a positive contribution to our school , making the most of the responsibility given to them.
The vast majority of our Sixth Formers go on to study at University after their A-Levels. A minority take a Gap Year or may enter employment (with training). We take a great deal of care and time to offer Sixth Form students impartial advice and guidance about their choices for learning/employment after their time at The Harvey. OFSTED noted that ‘The school provides very effective careers advice and guidance and a suitable range of study pathways with clear routes to further study or employment. Learners in the sixth form are ambitious; most progress to good universities, while others gain access to further education, training or employment in their chosen field through apprenticeships’.
We are committed to the ideal that learning outside the classroom is as important and rewarding as traditional academic study. To that end we have an extensive extra curricular programme that we expect Sixth Formers to participate in, to enjoy and to play a leading role in delivering. Our visits, trips and educational/sporting tours in the UK and abroad give students a wonderful opportunity to work hard and play hard outside the routines of a typical school day.
Please note that currently we only enrol male students. Female students wishing to study at the Harvey may be able to do so, but only after enrolling at Folkestone School for Girls.
