About us

Our philosophy here at Wilmington Academy Post 16 is to develop our students beyond the qualifications.  We believe your sixth form experience should offer you every opportunity to develop into a well-rounded, insightful, citizen of the world who will be best qualified to be successful in your adult life. So why us?

We do our absolute best to help you get the most from your years in Post 16.

We take pride in the support we offer our students. The provision here, judged “good” by Ofsted, ensures that each student is given personalised care to best help them succeed. Teaching staff regularly offer extra revision sessions and out-of-lesson help and advice, ensuring you have every opportunity to be successful in your courses.

Furthermore, we have a dedicated sixth-form tutor team with small form groups and one-to-one mentoring sessions. Form groups help instill a sense of community, but also help develop skills such as organization, debate, critical thinking, and reflection. Form time is a key component in helping students develop into well-rounded, mature young adults.

Form tutors also provide structure and aid in planning and writing personal statements, and choosing post-secondary pathways, such as preparing for UCAS or finding suitable apprenticeships and employment.  Together with the Leigh Academies Trust’s Careers Adviser, tutors offer impartial advice and guidance, in order to help you progress within your chosen careers.

Facilities available

All students have access to ICT facilities, an extensive learning resource centre, including careers and further education advice and publications,
as well as fully resourced vocational curriculum zones, which reflect the conditions of work in a variety of employment sectors.  We actively engage with our partner universities and other external agencies to ensure every opportunity is afforded to our students to make positive progress.

Students have regular trips, guest speakers, and workshops on offer. Past trips have included the Royal Parks of London, Covent Garden, Camden Market, trips to the theatre, university visits, Brussels, Kenya and Sri Lanka. We are incredibly excited to be offering a trip in 2020 to Cambodia .

Guest speakers last year included representatives from Guide Dogs, accountants from the city, representatives from the Royal Opera House, Barnaby Wynter, and Sir Charlie Mayfield. Each speaker allows students insight into building community, ambition, or professional skills.

We also work with the National Citizens Service. Our students attend a Residential to team-build and develop confidence, then work in groups to lead a volunteering project in the local community.  There are also numerous opportunities for you to volunteer, including a peer-mentoring scheme, the Student Leadership, and community events.

All these experiences allow our students to experience a world outside the classroom, developing curiosity, ambition, and global awareness.

Additional support

Our stand alone tutor team work with all students as their mentor to ensure student progress is monitored and early support is implemented if required.
