Welcome to The Folkestone Academy
Welcome to the Folkestone Academy Glassworks Sixth Form online prospectus and thank you for considering us.
The Folkestone All-Age Academy is an 11-19 school with a broadly Christian ethos. Our state of the art learning environment offers a truly modern approach to teaching and learning. The Folkestone All-Age Academy has been sponsored by former Saga Chairman, Roger De Haan, and by Kings School Canterbury, one of the country’s leading independent schools. The Academy is a partner school with the University of Kent and benefits from two substantial bursaries awarded to eligible students who attend the University from the Academy. Links have also been forged with Canterbury Christ Church University and the Creative Foundation, Folkestone. We are unique in being to offer a very diverse range of courses, work based, work related and academic at levels 1,2 and 3. These courses are offered in three modern state of the art facilities with highly qualified staff located at each centre. These include the main Academy opened in 2007, the Primary Academy opened in 2013 and the Glassworks Sixth Form Centre also opened in 2013.
Post 16 Provision
An integral part of the Folkestone All Age Academy, the new Glassworks Sixth Form Centre is situated in the heart of the town’s thriving Creative Quarter and offers students a unique and innovative environment in which to study and learn. Opened in September 2013, The Glassworks has raised the bar for sixth form provision in Kent not only in terms of the building itself but also the range of courses that are available to study. Specialist facilities, the highest quality teaching and an exciting range of Level 3 courses plus a dedicated and self-contained building where students are treated as young adults makes the Glassworks Sixth Form Centre an attractive option for Post-16 study.
Our three-tier sixth form offers a wide variety of traditional AS and A level courses such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Fine Art, Graphics, Textiles, Photography, English Literature, French and History. It also includes modern BTEC courses in Business, ICT, Law, Media, Drama, Dance, Music/Music Technology and Sport to name but a few. For those who are serious about rugby, football or basketball in particular, we have three Sport Academies, Rugby Academy, Football Academy and Basketball Academy offering a unique opportunity to develop your ability in these sports.
Level 3 students enjoy an independent, flexible and relaxed environment which is more like college or university than school, but with all the support and guidance they need in order to achieve both their personal and academic goals. Students are encouraged to actively engage with the local community through our links with the Creative Foundation, the Quarterhouse and other local enterprises and to help shape the future of the town through empowerment, challenge and active citizenship.
The Glassworks is equipped with the very best in educational facilities throughout the building and boasts two large, purpose built studios for drama and dance, a large Mac suite with green screen capability for Media students, a photography studio, a digital music suite and recording studio and individual music and practice rooms. Art, graphics and textiles are taught in dedicated, well equipped classrooms and there are two laboratories for sciences. Sports students have access to an all-weather pitch, multi-use games area, cricket square and playing fields at the main site. In addition, our Rugby Academy students train and develop at the Folkestone Rugby Club where they have an additional four rugby pitches. In 2013 two of our teams were able to tour South Africa and enjoyed a similar tour to Italy in July 2015.
Throughout their time in the Sixth Form students are encouraged to get involved with the running of the Academy in a variety of ways such as mentoring younger students, helping out with sports coaching, working in the radio station and assisting at Open Evenings and other events. They are also encouraged to get involved with the wider community by participating in local events and helping raise funds for charities. The Folkestone Academy believes that every student should be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential, and the sixth form is no exception. A dedicated group of sixth form tutors are on hand to support mentor and advise students and a specially designed individualised Careers programme is available for all students in preparation for a successful entry into higher education or employment.
