About us

Varndean College – Room to be you

Set in open green playing fields with direct views across Brighton to the sea, Varndean College has room for you to develop your unique potential whilst making new friends.

Students tell us that they choose to come to Varndean College because of our wide choice of courses and our consistently excellent results. They are particularly drawn to the College because of its beautiful setting and feeling of space.

Students enjoy working with enthusiastic, friendly and supportive staff in an environment where learning matters. Our new library in the loft is so much more than a library and provides an exciting space in which to learn; the attractive charm of the original, open internal quads makes them a popular, but peaceful, outdoor social space for everyone.

Flexibility, choice and responsiveness make us different. Varndean College is big enough to be able to offer over 40 advanced level courses and run multiple sets so that almost any subject combinations is possible; at the same time we are a relatively small College of 1,525 students and are able to respond to you as an individual. We also offer a wide range of pre advanced level courses to suit all interests and abilities.

At Varndean College, developing each student’s individual potential and success is vital to us. Whether you want to go straight into employment or are aiming to go to a top university, we have had years of experience (and an impressive track record) of helping students to achieve their goals.

Additional support

Supported Study Sessions

The aim of Supported Study Sessions is to enhance independent learning and develop study skills. Students can bring their coursework and work independently with access to a support tutor. The sessions are small, with a maximum of ten students and are available every morning in the Additional Support Department.

Individual Support

Individual support is tailored to specific learning needs. This may include 1:1 support, in-class support or the provision of a quiet space at break times. This support will be fully discussed, agreed and reviewed with students on an individual basis.

Exam Arrangements

Students who need access arrangements in exams will be invited to an assessment session in the Additional Support Department at the beginning of term. It is important that you let us know about previous exam arrangements on your application form, at interview or you can speak to a Specialist Teacher in Additional Support.

Learner success

We are delighted with the success of our students who have once again maintained an impressive Advanced Level record.

  • Overall pass rate at A level was 98.4% with 56.4% achieving A*-B and 81.4% achieving A*-C grades
  • More than two thirds of all A level subjects had a 100% pass rate
  • The college also recorded a high AS pass rate of 86.7%

The A level success follows equally impressive International Baccalaureate results in July. Varndean College is the only college designated by the Government to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Brighton & Hove and is now in its eighth year of running this highly respected advanced level programme.

  • The average International Baccalaureate point score was 36.02, which is the equivalent of 3 A grades at A level
  • Overall pass rate was 98%
  • 16 of our 43 students achieved 40 points or better, with one individual scoring the full 45 points.
