Welcome to Varndean College
Set on a beautiful green campus with views over Brighton and the sea, Varndean College offers a community and ethos which all students who study here say promotes diversity, multiculturalism and acceptance. The College offers a wide range of courses to suit a diverse range of students’ requirements, meaning their programme of study can be tailored into a profile to uniquely suit them.
Students say that one of the greatest things about Varndean College is that it doesn’t feel like being at school. Students and staff are on a first-name basis, everyone is treated like an adult, and it offers an excellent transition from college to university. Students tell us they choose to study here because of the friendly, supportive atmosphere and sense of community. Our staff are passionate about the subjects, keen to help students reach their potential and help them every step of the way.
As well as the grassy slopes and playing fields that surround the building, Varndean College has plenty of social space for students to use during their breaks. When the weather permits they can enjoy relaxing in the internal open-air quads, or use the College’s inside facilities, such as the canteen and coffee bar, student common room, library or open access IT facilities.
To find out more about the College and the courses we are able to offer, please come to one of our Open Events during the Autumn Term:
SAT 29 SEPTEMBER 2018 - OPEN DAY 11AM - 2PM
WED 07 & THURS 08 NOVEMBER 2018 - OPEN EVENINGS 6.30PM - 9.00PM
These are opportunities to look around the college, visit subject tutors, meet current students, collect information, watch the college video presentation as well as attend any demonstrations and talks. There is no need to book a place in advance - just turn up on the day.
From The Principal, Dr. Philip Harland
"I like to think that Varndean College is a College with a difference."
Different in that we are set on a lovely spacious green campus with stunning views of Brighton and the sea, and not only do we offer over 30 traditional A Levels, but also a range of vocational BTECs, a small but significant number of GCSEs, as well as the increasingly popular International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Our aim here at Varndean College is to develop our students into well-rounded,
confident and free thinking individuals, who are ready and excited to move on to the next stage of their lives. We aim to meet the varied needs of the young people who choose to study at Varndean, with our provision being wide enough for us to fit the curriculum around them. My teaching staff are passionate about the subjects which they teach and support their students every step of the way.
Over recent years it has been my desire to improve and expand upon the facilities we offer to our students and this can be seen in our second floor ‘Loft’, which houses a large modern library/careers centre with plenty of independent study space and nine
classrooms; a new fitness suite and student common room; a new extended science lab in our Hutchins Wing; and planned for 2019, a newly built Science and Mathematics Centre.
I know that the students who come here are happy, and happy students make successful students. Wherever you choose to go, it is important to select somewhere that feels right for you. Go along to college open evenings and talk to subject tutors and current tutors. I hope that in doing so you will feel that Varndean College is the place for you and we will have the opportunity to welcome you here next September.

Supported Study Sessions
The aim of Supported Study Sessions is to enhance independent learning and develop study skills. Students can bring their coursework and work independently with access to a support tutor. The sessions are small, with a maximum of ten students and are available every morning in the Additional Support Department.
Individual support is tailored to specific learning needs. This may include 1:1 support, in-class support or the provision of a quiet space at break times. This support will be fully discussed, agreed and reviewed with students on an individual basis.
Students who need access arrangements in exams will be invited to an assessment session in the Additional Support Department at the beginning of term. It is important that you let us know about previous exam arrangements on your application form, at interview or you can speak to a Specialist Teacher in Additional Support.
