We are delighted that you are considering Dudley College for the next stage in your education. 2012/13 was an exceptional year for us with the opening of the Dudley Learning Quarter marking a new era in our 150-year history.
The creation of the Dudley Learning Quarter has significantly changed the landscape of Dudley and improved the provision of further education for young people and adults across the borough.
We pride ourselves in offering practical, hands-on learning in a range of subjects, giving you the skills and experience that employers are looking for, so you can progress in your chosen career. If you are planning to go to university, our hands-on thinking approach provides lots of options for studying vocational or academic courses to help you on your way.
Our long standing tradition of providing a friendly and supportive place to learn starts when you contact us or walk through the college doors for the first time, as we are committed to putting you, the learner, at the heart of all we do.

The new Learning Quarter brings together;
- The Broadway, Dudley College’s main site established in 1862
- Dudley Evolve, the college’s new vocational training centre opened in September 2012
- Dudley Sixth, a purpose built sixth form centre opened in September 2012
- Dudley Advance, a brand new high specification centre for advanced manufacturing and engineering technology opening in 2014

Fantastic learning facilities for travel and tourism, sport, public services, performing arts, hair and beauty, media, graphics, art and design, along with a new stage school for performing arts, dance and music students.
With a new sports hall, state-of-the-art equipment and modern, air conditioned fitness suite open to the public and those studying on sports-related courses, there’s no excuse not to join in.
Evolve Hair & Beauty
Get the best from your course at the new purpose-built hair salon and beauty therapy suite, where the public will be calling in to give you the real-life experience that will make you stand out to employers.
Now our performing arts students can really put on a show, as they’ll have access to a theatre with all the stage, lighting, sound and performance equipment you’d find in any commercial theatre. Also look out for a series of shows put on by touring productions companies.
Design and Visual Arts
Imagine a room full of Apple Macs and the latest software that you need to understand the world of design. Or perhaps you’re more inclined to work with paint, glass or other materials to get your creative juices flowing? Our art and design department offers top-class facilities for our students.
Those with an ambition to join the uniformed services will get a great start to their career at Dudley Evolve, where they will be able to use all the resources to test their fitness, exercise their brains and develop their team skills.
If you’ve heard that our travel and tourism students get to practice on a real-life aeroplane, you’ve heard correctly. We like them to get a feel for the industry they will be working in, so there are lots of facilities and resources they can access – just the ticket if you want your career to take off.

These qualifications are an ideal stepping stone if you want to progress to university or enter the world of work. Studying at Dudley College will give you the skills and knowledge you need to enter the service, manufacturing or international industries.
The computing industry is diverse and this is reflected in our range of qualifications. If your interests lie in developing web sites, programming or supporting and maintaining hardware, we have a course for you.
Retail development in the Black Country is expanding with an anticipated growth of 11% in the next two years. Put yourself in the market for a successful career by developing the work related skills that the retail sector is looking for.
Hospitality & Catering
The combination of our purpose-built training kitchen together with our specialist tutors, all from professional catering backgrounds, will prepare you for your future in the hospitality and catering industry.
Our workshops are equipped with industry standard machinery and equipment to ensure you are trained to go into the engineering sector. Whether it’s electrical engineering, computer aided design (CAD) or more general engineering practices such as CNC or bench work, our hands-on approach is the start of your bright future.

Our bespoke workshops and industry standard equipment are the key to jump start your career in the motor vehicle trade.
The Library holds over 40,000 volumes spanning all curriculum areas to ensure you have the best resources to support your studies. Friendly staff are always on hand to assist and guide you with finding the resources that you require. All the library items are listed in the online catalogue which is accessible both in college and via the internet from home. As a student, you are able to borrow up to eight books and two DV Ds or CDs with access to many journals, newspapers and reference items which can be used within the library. We have a wide range of electronic resources available through the Athens online portal such as:

ipoint Student Learning Centre
With over 225 computers, the iPoint Student Learning Centres are available for independent study. You can use the centres on a drop-in basis to access the internet, online resources, scanners and printers to support your studies. Staff are on hand to offer any
support or guidance that may be needed.We also offer services such as:
- Support with Blackboard, ProPortal and passwords
- Help with finding online resources for your course
- Essential Byte sessions
- Wireless Internet Access (Wi-Fi)
- Equipment loan
- Electronic Whiteboard training
The college has three online systems to support you with your learning. These systems are supported by our e-Learning team who can answer any questions you may have about them.
The systems are:
Blackboard and Blackboard Mobile –The Virtual Learning
Blackboard allows you to access many college and online learning tools which can be viewed from anywhere with an internet connection. When you enrol at the college, you will find many general resources in the “Virtual Library” and specific materials for your studies in your course area. These may include PowerPoint presentations, class notes, tests, videos, discussion boards and much more.We also have Blackboard Mobile, an App for your smart phone or tablet which allows you to access your course material on the go. Speak to your tutor to find out what is available for your course.
ProPortal – Electronic Individual Learning Plan (e-ILP)
All students have an e-ILP which tracks your progress through your course. The system at the college is called ProPortal which you can access anywhere with an internet connection. It allows you to see, contribute and work towards targets and reviews within your e-ILP. This includes sections about your studies, targets set by your tutors, assessment grades and details of meetings you have had around the college. Your class timetable and attendance data can also be viewed in ProPortal.
Live@EDU – Email, 25GB of online storage and Microsoft Web Apps
With the Live@EDU service, students have access to:
- A Dudley College email account with 10 GB of email storage
- 25GB of online document storage, perfect for your college work
- Microsoft Web Apps (Microsoft Word, excel and PowerPoint)
So you’ll never be without the tools you need to complete your work!
Where to eat
There are various places in the Dudley Learning Quarter to purchase a range of hot and cold food and drinks including:
- The Refectory at The Broadway and Mons Hill
- Coffee Shops at The Broadway and Evolve
- Vending machines at all sites
There are also two shops selling a range of snacks and giftware at The Broadway and Evolve.
Our learning centres have been designed to provide you with a quiet, friendly atmosphere in which you can work, supported with up-to-date modern resources.
Experienced staff are available to help you with your studies. We can help you with:
- Study skills
- Revision Techniques
- Exam strategies
- Language, Literacy or Numeracy skills
- Course work
We will help you to develop the skills and strategies to enable you to become a more effective, independent student.
The sessions we offer:
- Can be in small groups or on 1:1 basis
- Will be timetabled just like your other lessons
- Will provide resources based on the needs of your course
You will work towards targets that you have negotiated and agreed with your support tutor. Your progress towards your targets will be reviewed regularly. Support will last for as long as you need it. Statistics show that students who attend support for their learning are more likely to stay on their chosen course and therefore are more likely to succeed.
We have a wide range of support services and facilities including:
- Dedicated disabled parking facilities
- Dedicated disabled toilet facilities accessed via RADAR keys
- Health and welfare support
- Advice, guidance and counselling
- Special dietary provision
- Care assistance
- Dyslexia support
- Loop systems for deaf alerters for hearing impaired students
- Specialist software and materials in alternative formats such as Braille, large text or audio for visually impaired students
- Special arrangements for assistance during exams
Counselling, mentoring and welfare services
For most students, studying at college is a happy and fulfilling time but occasionally you may experience difficulties that may be preventing you from concentrating fully on your studies. Whilst your course or programme tutor is usually the first point of contact for information
or advice on many issues, you can also get help from any of the student support teams.
- A team of qualified counsellors who can offer confidential support on personal issues
- A team of mentors who can help with life skills, motivation ad organisation
- A team of finance and welfare advisors who can help with financial support and advice about housing, benefits and childcare.
WHAT IS A BUDDY?
A buddy is a person who has already completed their first year at college. Buddies are prepared to share their experiences of college life to help you to settle in and complete your course.
There are three types of buddy:
STUDY BUDDY – To support you by offering help with study techniques and studying together.
BUDDY – To support you by listening to your concerns and helping you to work out positive solutions.
CYBER BUDDY – To support you with problems related to social networking and cyber bullying.
