Welcome to West Midlands Construction UTC

We are extremely excited that the West Midlands Construction UTC (WMCUTC) will be opening its doors in September 2015. WMCUTC will be a revolutionary new University Technical College offering a unique ‘vocademic’ approach to education. This will be delivered through a curriculum which combines academic rigour with a distinctly vocational perspective, benefiting young people and the construction industry alike.

The construction industry is a massively broad employment sector offering professional and technical careers in fields such as Architecture, Interior Design, Surveying, Civil and Structural Engineering, Planning, Project Management, Site Management, Logistics and Procurement to name just a few. WMCUTC will prepare students to excel within all aspects of this employment sector.

WMCUTC couldn’t have come at a better time for the West Midlands. There will be major skills shortages as nearly one in five workers are set to retire in the next five to ten years. WMCUTC will not only support the industry by plugging the skills gap, but will give young people a significant advantage as they enter the jobs market. Our aim is to engage local young people in work-focused learning that will give them a head start in their future careers with Construction and the Built Environment.

About us

The West Midlands Construction UTC, based at Springfield Brewery in Wolverhampton, is a revolutionary technical college opening in September 2015. It will provide 14-19 year olds from Birmingham, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Shropshire with excellent, full-time, technical learning alongside five GCSEs including Maths and English. Specialising in Construction and the application of IT in the built environment, the West Midlands UTC will be a centre of construction excellence, offering young people a fantastic opportunity to significantly boost their employability. The UTC focusses on professional and technical career preparation within the Construction and related IT industries (including Architecture, Interior Design, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Software and Hardware development and more)

Facilities available

WMCUTC will be based alongside the University of Wolverhampton's School of Architecture and the Built Environment giving it a university campus feel. It will be purpose built and will boast hi-tech technical learning environments and cutting edge IT equipment. Our employer partners will lead real-life projects which will replicate the working environment in technical workshops and on our purpose built construction training sites. There will also be break-out areas for relaxation and private study. All learners will have access to their own ICT machine, a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) and a campus-wide wireless network.

Additional support

One of the most important ways that WMCUTC will enhance the work-ready skills of the students is to provide a mentor from the industry for every student. This will be a unique partnership between the industry and the UTC and is a clear demonstration of the industry’s commitment to find, develop and encourage the next generation of construction trade, technical, and professional people. Our ambition is to provide one mentor from the across the Construction and Built Environment industry for every student. The mentor and student will meet at least twice each year at WMCUTC or the employer’s premises, with electronic contact during the rest of the year. The mentor and student will work on a curriculum related project over the course of their meetings each year. For the post 16 students this will lead to the Extended Project Qualification which will be a key component of the Technical Baccalaureate. The mentoring relationship will also assist the student in developing the knowledge, skills and personal qualities that are valued by employers and raise the student’s sights and broaden their horizons in terms of career or learning goals. In addition the relationship will provide relationships and networks within the industry to help kick start a student’s career.

Learner success

We will offer young people who want a career in construction the opportunity to fast-track into the industry; through unrivalled progression routes into employment, Apprenticeships and Higher Education.

We will provide young people with a significant advantage in the careers market – they will learn business skills, construction skills and problem solving which will help them to develop into highly employable young professionals.

Our young people will be work-ready when they leave us. WMCUTC will operate an 8.30am to 5.00pm school day, replicating a working day, and technical projects will be delivered in real-life working environments, overseen by local employers.

WMCUTC learners will have unparalleled access to construction employers to ease their transition into work. Every learner will have their own employer mentor and will work alongside local businesspeople on technical projects on a curriculum that has been developed in partnership with the region’s largest construction firms.

Our students will study in a corporate campus, accessing exceptional teaching and sporting facilities to enable them to become well rounded and confident as well as academically and technically qualified.

    • Springfield Brewery is a beautiful historic site in the centre of Wolverhampton. Together WMCUTC and the University of Wolverhampton are acquiring the site to renovate it and build new facilities to colocate the UTC and the University's School of Architecture and the Built Environment. Together these institutions will create a Centre for Construction Excellence in the heart of the West Midlands. Students joining the UTC in September 2015 will have the unique opportunity to be directly involved in the Design and Build processes of their own UTC. This will mean that during year 1 students will be based at an alternative school site in Wolverhampton from which they can engage in the construction of this amazing site.
