In the North West, one in ten jobs are now in the creative and digital sector. Manchester is the second largest creative and digital city in Europe. This has generated real demand for people with hands-on industry experience.
 
The purpose of UTC@MediaCityUK is to give you the workplace skills companies are crying out for. We work with employer partners to ensure what you learn really  is relevant to what those industries require. We equip you with the technical skills, industry awareness and commercial knowledge to get started in this fast-moving environment.

About us

We’re a University Technical College that opened in September 2015, initially for Year 10s and Year 12s, specialising in the creative and digital industries.We’re located within MediaCityUK in Salford Quays.
 
We’re all about getting you ready for work in the creative and digital industries. How? 
By giving you not only the qualifications but also the experience firms are looking for.
 
Specialist study and hands-on experience
 
You learn core academic subjects like English and Maths. 
But alongside them, you choose a specialist area of study:
  • TV, Film & Audio
  • Interactive Media & Gaming

we also offer A Levels in:

  • Computer Science
  • English Literature
  • English Language
  • Maths
  • Physics

Some of what you're taught is academic, and you also get plenty of hands-on experience including sessions in our industry-standard studios, for example. Our employer partners are on hand to provide live briefs, workshops, project work, mentoring and master-classes.

Love what you learn, every single day
 
Because we provide specialist training for the creative and digital industries, you get to spend plenty of time doing the things you love. At 14 (Key Stage 4), students spend 40% of their time on their chosen specialist area, rising to 60% at 16 (Key Stage 5).

Step through the doors of our brand new student campus and you enter the Cauldron – a futuristic reception atrium. It’s bustling with students catching up in the cafe, taking in the latest exhibition of work or using the soft seating and quiet study area. It feels more like a workplace than a school. And that’s just as it should be.

Every aspect of the new four-floor UTC building is designed to help students be productive, acquire skills and enjoy learning. With filming studios, performance areas, a radio studio and a live lounge alongside gaming and design labs and a science cluster, the campus has been designed in every detail to support an innovative creative and digital curriculum.

Located close to the Broadway and MediaCityUK tram stations, the college is a vital new component in the heart of the creative and digital media community where our students will spend time learning workplace skills. When full, the UTC campus will hold 720 students. Every one a talented young individual.

Additional support

The campus features several distinct areas, including ones for each of the creative and digital courses we offer. Fully equipped to help you learn the skills you’ll need to succeed in the creative and digital media sector.

TV & FILM HUB

In the TV & Film hub you’ll get to grips with studio camera, lighting and sound technology, single and multi-camera techniques, film and video editing techniques, pre and post production, music video production.

RADIO & AUDIO HUB

Based on the second floor of the campus, our Radio and Audio Hub includes studios, control rooms and editing facilities all superbly equipped to professional standards to help you acquire real-world skills in sound production and engineering.

GRAPHICS & DESIGN / INTERACTIVE MEDIA & GAMING HUB

In our Graphics and Design Hub and ICT Labs you’ll learn all about web authoring, content development, and creative and graphic design skills for digital media.

SCIENCE CLUSTER, ICT HUB & GENERAL TEACHING AREAS

Of course, alongside your specialist studies, you’ll also be learning core subjects like Biology and Chemistry in the purpose-built Science Cluster, as well as English, Maths, Languages and ICT, all taught with reference to creative and digital media issues. And entrepreneurial skills will be developed throughout the curriculum, wherever you are on the campus. Problem-solving, teamwork, risk-taking and industry issues will all form part of the skills you will acquire in this innovative campus.

WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE

Our aim is simple – to make you ready for work in the creative and digital industries. How? By giving you not only the qualifications but also the experience firms are looking for.

So you’ll work closely with our employer partners to pick up workplace skills. Video editing with ITV, for instance. Or 3D graphic design at The Landing.

Doing well in this dynamic sector is also about attitude. Those who thrive are determined, passionate and not afraid to take risks. Some call it entrepreneurial spirit: we intend to help you develop this.

Your time with us will be inspiring, challenging but, above all, fun. The creative and digital industries are filled with enthusiastic people who love what they do for a living. This is your chance to join them.
