Welcome to Plymouth High School for Girls

It is with great pride that I welcome you to Plymouth High School for Girls, a State selective grammar school under Plymouth Local Authority. I have been in post as Headteacher since January 2008 and I am enjoying a long and happy association with the school. I am striving hard to ensure we build on the excellent work that is already in place. Our last Ofsted inspection praised Plymouth High School as being a good and improving school which enables students to achieve well and to develop into confident, articulate and thoughtful young adults. I believe that we provide an excellent experience for our girls and that we will be judged ‘outstanding’ at our next inspection.

Plymouth High School was founded in 1874 and therefore builds on a long tradition of excellence. Our motto ‘For Life Not School We Learn’ is still relevant today and at the heart of what drives us forward. In years 7 to 11 we have 600 girls on roll. Our Sixth Form is open to both girls and boys and has grown in numbers to 220.  It is our duty and responsibility to support every one of our students to achieve the highest standards academically and whatever their unique gifts, talents and needs, develop excellence in areas of their choice. They are then able, when they leave school, to take their place as active citizens in a global society with a lifelong love of learning.

I want Plymouth High to be the school that enables everyone who joins us to learn and make progress; where we care for the students’ wellbeing; where we work in collaboration and partnership to improve opportunities for all; and for it to be a school of excellence and equity that sets high standards of behaviour, expectation and a commitment to learning.

Our aim is for our students to be confident, creative and caring young people, who are knowledgeable, inquiring thinkers and innovators. We believe in the 3 Rs of respect, resilience and responsibility and all our girls from the time they enter the school in year 7 are given opportunities to develop as leaders.

Plymouth High School is an exciting place to be and has a good reputation. There are so many things that are impacting on achievement: our continued focus on Technology; Languages and the International Schools Award; our strong collaboration and partnership with other schools.

It is a very special place. It does have a family atmosphere that provides a sense of warmth and welcome within a safe, stimulating environment. The members of staff here are one of the school’s biggest assets as they are so positive and deeply caring. This ensures that it is a strong and supportive community. The students are fantastic and the best advocates for the school, and rightly so we are proud to celebrate the diversity of achievement across the school.

I believe it is important to work in partnership with parents and students to achieve a successful and happy school. Personally I have found it very heartening to be welcomed so warmly by so many people and experience such friendliness and enthusiasm from the community since joining the school. I couldn’t expect to find a better place to lead.
