Welcome to St Brendan's Sixth Form College

I am delighted you are considering making an application to St Brendan's. We are an ambitious college with high aspirations for all of our students.

The College is graded Good by OFSTED who on their last visit found that an "increasing proportion of students are succeeding and achieving high grades, the progress that students made in comparison to their results in GCSE examinations was very good" that "students enjoy College life" and that they "benefit significantly from the wide range of enrichment programmes."

As the only Sixth Form College in the area we have a great deal to offer you. Our self-contained campus with state-of-the-art buildings provide a unique grown up, community feel. We are aiming to help you develop into an independent learner, ready for your next step whether it's university, an apprenticeship or entering employment. If you're ambitious to achieve within this kind of environment, we would be delighted to welcome you and guide you to success.

Facilities available

St Brendan's Sixth Form College was almost entirely rebuilt in 2009 to provide university-standard facilities to students within a relaxing and supportive environment.

We are fortunate to be located on one site, with very pleasant grounds, which are used and enjoyed by students throughout the year. These have been extensively landscaped to reflect our historic surroundings. As part of the capital investment, the College has ensured that its provision of technology is at the 'cutting edge'. Equipment and software provided is the same as that used by higher education institutions and industry. All areas of the College are accessible to wheelchair users. The focus on providing specialist facilities, dedicated to meeting the needs of post-16 students, makes St Brendan's an ideal and enjoyable place to learn and develop as a young adult.

All buildings have been designed to minimise the College's impact on the environment, utilising the earth's natural resources, such as sunlight and rainwater. They are designed to minimise the carbon emissions, whilst providing a great place to work and study.

All areas of the College are accessible for wheelchair users.

The College is a very safe site and we work hard to ensure that it remains so. In assisting with this, it is vital that no head coverings are worn that prevent easy identification. This means for example, that motor cyclists must remove helmets immediately after parking their bikes in the designated parking space.

Examples of the facilities include:

  • Sports Hall
  • Science Labs
  • Performing Arts & Media Facilities
  • Learning Resource Centre
  • Creative Arts Suite
  • Communal Areas
  • Classrooms & Computer Facilities
  • Chapel

Additional support

College life can sometimes seem daunting, but don't worry! We have a team of people who work alongside your subject teachers to make sure you get help when you need it. Students at St Brendan's are all treated as inviduals and staff work hard to ensure your education and support is tailored to you.

We welcome students who have a disability, specific learning difficulty or medical condition and actively encourage early disclosure of needs so that we can talk to you about your support requirements. To ensure that the best possible support can be provided, it is important that students with recognised needs are assessed prior to entry to the College: a space on the application form is made available for this information and it can be discussed further at interview. Any written evidence of a learning difficulty should be included with the application so that we can plan for particular needs or apply for examination concessions, if applicable.

The College has a specialist Learning Development team who provide additional learning support which is tailored to individual needs. The team has its own suite of rooms including dedicated computers, specialist software and a quiet zone.

The Learning Support Team offers one-to-one development or small group support to enable you to develop the necessary skills to succeed on your course. This might be specialist support for an impairment or disability, individually planned support for those with a recognised learning difficulty, or generalised help to raise the standard of work for any student, whether or not you have a specific difficulty. Assistance is offered for all subjects with an emphasis on study skills and essay writing, using a variety of techniques and resources.

Learner success

St Brendan’s Sixth Form College is celebrating another year of great A-level results.  It is the only Sixth Form College and the biggest A-level provider in the Bristol-Bath region and a total of 690 of its students sat A-level exams this summer.

This year the A-level pass rate was an impressive 97.3%, with over 70.2% of students achieving A*- C grades in their exams. St Brendan’s provides students with a huge choice of over 50 A-level courses, and this year 30 of those subjects are boasting a 100% pass rate.

A large number of students have excelled in all of their respective subjects and 21 of them are toasting the fact that they have been awarded A*s or A grades for three or more of their A-level subjects. Jenny Chambers, Elliot Maidstone and Alice Cave are amongst St Brendan’s star performers this year and have all secured 3 A* top grades in their A-levels.
