Welcome to Ashington Community High School

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the staff, students and governors of Ashington High School to welcome you to our website.

Our goals are for students to feel safe and be happy; to build positive relationships and friendships and accept new opportunities; to develop as learners and all round individuals; and ultimately to be equipped to move on successfully to the next stage of their lives in education, training or employment.

At Ashington, we are proud to have a dedicated group of staff working as teachers and in the wider workforce. We share an aim that learning and achievement are for everyone and we want to create success for all students by providing them with the education they need to become confident, articulate, independent learners who are ready to take their place in the world. Through the provision of high-quality learning and enrichment opportunities both in and beyond the classroom and our continued commitment to PE and school sport as a legacy specialist sports college, we also demonstrate our determination to create active, healthy and informed citizens of tomorrow.

Ashington High School is a strongly inclusive school and is a calm and orderly place. We expect high standards of behaviour and presentation from all members of the school community and consider respect and good manners as crucial everyday aspects of school life. Because we believe that all of our students can achieve well and that everyone has something to contribute, we are committed to meeting the needs of all students, whether it be providing additional support for some, or adding an additional challenge for others.

We are also an ambitious school and are continually looking for ways to improve our provision and raise the level of achievement of our students. We pride ourselves on being a learning community in which every one of us, pupils, staff and governors, reflect continually on how well we perform and seek ways to do things better.
For visitors, our brochure and website aim to introduce you to life at Ashington, but there can be no substitute for a visit; feel free to contact us to make an appointment.

I thank you for visiting our website and look forward to showing you around our school and answering any questions you may have.

About us

Ashington High School was opened in 1960 as Ashington Grammar School. It became a comprehensive school in the mid-seventies and is now an 11 to 18  Secondary School.  It was designated a specialist Sports College in 2001.

In 2007 we became a Foundation School (we own our land & buildings and employ our staff) and part of the Ashington Learning Partnership, one of the first Educational Trusts in the country. We left the Ashington Learning Partnership on 1st March 2016 but remain part of the wider Ashington Partnership with our five feeder Primary Schools:

Bothal Primary; Central Primary; Ellington Primary; Linton Primary; Pegswood Primary.

The area served by the school is predominantly the west of the town and several outlying villages. Many of our students come to school by bus. Ashington High School is a very popular school due to excellent liaison work with partner schools, some exciting and engaging projects which have gained publicity for the school and improved performance in examinations. The school has had a great deal of success in recent years.

We have a highly committed staff and a strong and enthusiastic governing body. Parents are very supportive of the school. As an extended school, we have a thriving programme of extra-curricular activities and adult education. Many of our students are qualified Sports Leaders through the Junior, Community and Higher Sports Leadership Awards. We regularly have charity fund raising events and have a lot of fun in the process of raising thousands of pounds for deserving causes.
