Welcome to The New Sixth Bath
The New Sixth is the joint post-16 provision of the sixth forms of St Gregory’s Catholic College and St Mark’s Church of England School, supported by the Clifton Diocese, Bath and Wells Diocese and Bath and North East Somerset Council.
Our vision is to provide an outstanding post-16 education in the widest sense: an outstanding academic education, but also an education in the meaning and values of the Gospel, especially a commitment to the dignity of the individual and care for the vulnerable. Our aim is that students will leave us imbued with these values to take their place as future leaders and make significant contributions to the common good of society.
A sixth form is the final stage of a secondary education before young men and women go on to university, college, employment or training. It is a time of academic application, with students following rigorous programmes of study and exploring their future options. We will be with our students at this crucial stage in their journey with personalised and attentive support and guidance, as well as teaching of the highest quality.
The sixth form is also a time for developing a range of other skills, prior to entering adult life. As a Christian sixth form provision we are mindful of the need to develop Christian values in our students as well as the leadership skills they will need to be effective and caring future citizens.
In recent years, there has been a growing demand for this type of provision from our parents. More and more of them have been looking for an alternative to large scale further education provision. While these institutions no doubt offer an efficient range of courses, they cannot offer the continuity of ethos and sense of structure, routine and pastoral care offered by a school sixth form.
The New Sixth, supported by B&NES Council, opened in September 2013 with a state of the art new building. The building has been designed by Bristol-based architects White Design, using innovative and sustainable construction techniques.
The new facilities boasts a range of learning spaces, from a student-centred Learning Resource Centre with a well-stocked sixth form library to modern, well-equipped teaching rooms and science laboratories. There is a dedicated social space for sixth form students and landscaped gardens. Facilities will be further enhanced by Phase 2 of The New Sixth that will include a performing arts space and community hub and a home for The Well, our spiritual centre supported by the Chaplains of Saint Gregory’s and St Mark’s.
In addition, our students benefit from the existing facilities at Saint Gregory’s which have received considerable investment in recent years and are widely regarded as providing an excellent educational environment.
This is the only sixth form provision in Bath and North East Somerset in the state sector with explicitly Christian values, building on the strong traditions of pastoral care that are such a feature of St Gregory’s and St Mark’s.
