Welcome to Saffron Walden County High School

As we continue in a changing and challenging new phase of post-16 education, the Sixth Form at SWCHS confidently maintains an exciting and varied curriculum as well as stimulating activities outside the class room. If you join our Sixth Form, we will help you achieve your potential, in whatever field that might be. The academic performance of our students is outstanding. The progress they made from GCSE placed us in the top five percent of sixth forms in England. Over the last three years, our students have made progress that is amongst the best in all Sixth Form schools and colleges. In 2017, 45% students gained places at Russell Group universities, including twelve at Oxford or Cambridge. Over 75% of our students achieved a place at their first choice of University. We offer a wide selection of A-Level courses; innovative timetabling enables most students to choose their subject combinations freely, whilst group sizes are kept at an average of 18 at AS and 15 at A-Level. Students are supported by teaching and learning of the highest quality, and by the academic and pastoral support of a team of experienced personal tutors, giving one-to-one guidance.
Students enjoy extended facilities as part of the Saffron Hall development. As well as a state of-the art concert hall, we have also extended the study and social facilities for the Sixth Form, including a dedicated Study Centre with over 100 computers available from 8.00am to 6.00pm most days and in the holidays. The post-16 Music Academy is also a great innovation. It aims to attract talented musicians from a wide area, by providing exceptional opportunities to develop their musical abilities and perform in Saffron Hall, our world class concert venue. Our Sixth Form is about more than academic success. As one of our students said to Ofsted inspectors: ‘We are encouraged to be well-rounded individuals, not just academically successful. ’We believe the Sixth Form is a stepping stone to higher education or employment, and encourage students to develop the skills needed to succeed independently.
