About us

The Sixth Form College Colchester is situated in the historic Roman town of Colchester. Our aim is to provide a high quality supportive environment, offering full-time academic and general education courses that equip 16-19 year old students with the qualifications, skills and attributes necessary for a successful future in higher education, employment, and life.

Facilities available

Many visitors to Colchester will be familiar with the iconic view of the main building, sitting on top of North Hill that can be seen as one drives up Balkerne Hill – including the huge windows for the Art Department that span the top of the entire building. Less immediately obvious are the seven other modern, purpose-built facilities. These include the recently completed Syd Kent Pavilion, with its’ ‘living roof’ and student social and study spaces, and the three specialist buildings for Languages, Performance and ICT. A tour of the College might, for example, include a visit to a sound studio, a student run charity shop, an AstroTurf pitch, a language lab, an electronics workshop, a radio station and dance rehearsal rooms.

Additional support

Additional support is  offered to students who wish to stretch themselves, for example, help with preparing for Oxbridge entrance and university applications. All students are encouraged to use the support and extension activities run by academic departments, together with the wide range of resources available on the College intranet. There are also opportunities for one-to-one learning support and help with study skills available from our Learning Support Team.

Learner success

Examination results in College have been consistently excellent. At A Level, pass rates and the proportion of students achieving high grades has been consistently above the national averages and our students have regularly achieved the best A Level results of any college in Essex, Suffolk or Norfolk.

The examination results achieved by College students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and GCSE examinations have also been consistently excellent. IB results have consistently been very significantly above the averages at both National and International level.
