Welcome to Merchant Taylors' Boys' School
Forget the debate being played out among politicians and in the media - A Level study is a rigorous, challenging and fulfilling experience, and never has there been a better time to be a Sixth Former at Merchant Taylors’. Whether already part of the school community or seeking to enter our Sixth Form from elsewhere, we are pleased to welcome hungry minds and independent learners and can offer, in turn, the very best academic experience and an impressive history of achievement. Our A*-B rate remains the envy of Merseyside, and with 80% of students from last year’s cohort achieving these grades in between three and five subjects, you can be assured of high quality teaching from enthusiastic subject specialists in small class sizes, as well as bespoke UCAS preparation, with Russell Group and 1994 Group universities at the forefront of applications. Oxbridge preparation for those with the credentials to pursue their passion for courses at Oxford or Cambridge is meticulous and the School has an impressive track record of placing its students in leading Higher Education institutions.
The School’s commitment to A Level study as the ‘gold standard’ is not merely a consequence of our success in public examinations. Whatever the future for post-16 education the intention of the fourth AS Level when initially introduced was to enable the academic breadth and diversity that universities and employers had been concerned was missing from the profile of many prospective applicants. We very much endorse this view and I would urge you to read the prospectus with an open mind and then to discuss with parents and teachers alike the permutations and possible selection of courses that interest you. You can be confident that all of the A Level courses we offer are respected nationally and internationally; we refuse to adulterate our A Level diet with the so-called ‘softer’ subjects - we are unashamedly a school for those with academic ambition and potential.
But our Sixth Form curriculum is anything but fusty and old-fashioned. A Level Philosophy and Ethics was introduced in the last academic year to enhance thinking skills and Heads of Department continue to review courses, schemes of work and specifications with a view to meeting the needs of all our students. Over the last three years the AQA Extended Project Qualification has been offered to enhance independent learning and preparation for university life, while we should not forget the extensive PSHE programme which involves the discussion of issues germane to the wider lives of our students and incorporates extensive Careers advice
